14 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin will be with child and give birth to a son, and will call Him Immanuel. — Isaiah 7:14
22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “Behold, the virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call Him Immanuel” (which means, “God with us”). — Matthew 1:22–23

The Heart of It

Around 700 years before Jesus was born, God spoke through the prophet Isaiah. "Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel" (). That name means "God with us." Seven centuries later, Matthew points back to that promise. He says it came true in Jesus (). This is one of the strongest reasons we trust the Bible. God told us the plan long before it happened. Then He kept His word exactly. No one could have arranged that by accident.

But "could God really become a baby?" is a fair question, and kids ask it honestly. The answer is yes. And it's the most wonderful thing in the world. Because God is all-powerful, becoming small was not too hard for Him. It was love, not weakness. He didn't stop being God when He became man. Think of how you kneel down to a child's level to look them in the eye. You don't stop being yourself. That's exactly what God did. He came down to where we are so we could see His face. The Maker of galaxies once needed His diaper changed. That's not silly. It's stunning. That is how far He was willing to come to be with us.

Around the Table

Littles 3–6

"Immanuel" means "God with us." God promised it a long, long time before. Then Jesus came, just like He said!

Let's do it: Say "Im-MAN-u-el!" together, then whisper "God with us."

Middles 7–9

God promised a special baby 700 years early, through Isaiah. When Jesus came, the promise came true. That helps us trust the Bible.

Let's talk: Why does it matter that the promise came true exactly the way God said?

Older 10–13

Isaiah gave this prophecy, and it came true in Jesus. God becoming man doesn't make Him less God. He humbled Himself, and He never stopped being divine.

Let's go deeper: If someone said "it's impossible for God to become human," how could you answer kindly using God's power and His promise?

Imagine you knew something amazing was going to happen in 700 years. Could you make sure it came true?Only God can promise the future and keep it perfectly.

🛡️ Defending the Faith

When someone says, "It's impossible for God to become a baby" — gently answer: "If God really made the whole universe, then stepping into it as a human isn't too hard for Him. It's just surprising." And we have a reason to believe He did it. He announced it through Isaiah 700 years early (), and it came true exactly (). We hold this with gentleness and respect, ready to give a reason for our hope ().

For Dad · Go Deeper

Fulfilled prophecy is one of the most accessible apologetics tools you can hand your kids, and Isaiah's "Immanuel" sign is a flagship example. Skeptics sometimes argue the Hebrew word almah means only "young woman." But the Septuagint answers that. That was the Greek translation Jewish scholars made before Christ, and it rendered the word parthenos, which means "virgin." And Matthew, writing under inspiration, confirms the meaning. Josh McDowell and J. Warner Wallace both emphasize that predictive prophecy is something no mere human movement could fabricate after the fact. Let this build your own confidence. The Bible isn't a collection of wishes. It's a record of a God who tells the future and then walks into it.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, thank You that You keep every promise. You even kept one made 700 years before Jesus came. Thank You that He is Immanuel, God with us. Help us trust Your Word completely. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

God kept His promise exactly. Jesus is Immanuel, God truly with us.
