For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth and the sea and all that is in them, but on the seventh day He rested. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.Exodus 20:11 (BSB)

Today's reading: Genesis 38–40

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 13 of 365 — Joseph in Egypt, faithful even in prison.)

The Heart of It

After God made people, He gave them a job. He said, "Have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing" (). Dominion doesn't mean being mean or wasteful. It means caring for the world. We care for it the way a good king cares for his people. We watch over it the way a shepherd looks after the sheep. God owns every creature. He has trusted us to look after them for Him. So the way we treat the animals and the world around us says something about our hearts. It shows how we feel toward the God who made them.

says it beautifully. "A righteous man regards the life of his animal, but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel." Did you catch that? The Bible measures part of our goodness by how we treat creatures. These are creatures who can't pay us back or fight for themselves. Loving others doesn't start only with people. It grows in small, daily kindnesses. We feed the pet. We are gentle with a bug. We don't break what God made just for fun. When children learn to be tender toward weak, small creatures, their hearts are being trained. They are learning to be tender toward weak, small people too. Kindness is kindness. And it all flows from knowing the kind Maker who made it all.

Around the Table

Littles 3–6

God made all the animals, and He asks us to be kind and gentle to them — feeding them and caring for them.

Let's do it: Practice petting an imaginary kitten gently. Soft hands! That's how God wants us to care for His creatures.

Middles 7–9

God put us in charge of caring for animals and the world — like a good shepherd, not a bully.

Let's talk: What's one job you could do this week to help care for a pet, a plant, or a part of God's world?

Older 10–13

Dominion means caring for the world under God, not using it up. And the Bible ties real goodness to how we treat the weak and helpless.

Let's go deeper: How does the way we treat weak creatures train our hearts to treat weak people? Where could you grow in kindness?

💬 Conversation Starter

If you could take care of any animal in the whole world, which one would you choose? And how would you look after it well?

🛡️ Defending the Faith

Many people feel that hurting animals is wrong. But only the Bible explains why. God made the creatures. He owns them. And He calls us to care for them (; ). If we were just rearranged chemicals, kindness would be only a feeling. But a good Creator made it all. So caring for His world is genuinely right.

The creation mandate of is foundational to a biblical view of work, environment, and responsibility. Theologians call it stewardship. It cuts a careful path between two ditches. On one side is the idolizing of nature, worshiping the creation rather than the Creator (). On the other side is the careless abuse of it, treating God's world as merely ours to exploit. Our dominion is delegated and accountable. We manage what belongs to Another. This is a wonderful arena to disciple your children practically. Assign real responsibilities. Give them a pet to feed or a garden corner to tend. Then connect those chores to the heart. Faithful care of small things under God shapes a person who can be trusted with much (). You're not just raising kids who like animals. You're forming faithful stewards.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, thank You for the amazing animals and the beautiful world You made. Help us care for them gently and well. Grow kind, tender hearts in us. Help us be gentle with every creature and every person. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

How I treat the smallest, weakest creatures shows the kindness God is growing in my heart.
