7 But I tell you the truth, it is for your benefit that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He comes, He will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:

The Heart of It

We've been talking all week about sin. We've seen that all of us have it, and that it hides in our hearts. But here's an honest question. If our hearts can fool even us (), how would we ever truly see our need for a Savior? On our own, we'd just keep making excuses. So Jesus told His friends something. When He went away, He would send the Holy Spirit, the Helper. And one of the Helper's first jobs would be this. "He will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment" (). To "convict" means to gently and clearly show someone a truth they couldn't see before.

This is the Holy Spirit working as the kindest doctor you'll ever meet. He doesn't bully us. He doesn't make us feel hopeless. Conviction is not the same as shame. Shame says, "You're worthless. Hide." But the Spirit's conviction says, "Here's the real problem, and here's the Savior. Come." Think of that little tug you feel inside when you've done wrong. That quiet voice that says, "you need to make this right." For those who belong to Jesus, that's the Holy Spirit at work, loving you toward the cross. So when we feel it, we don't run away from God. We run to Him. The Spirit only shows us our need so He can lead us to the One who meets it.

Around the Table

Littles 3–6

The Holy Spirit gives you a little "uh-oh" feeling inside when you do something wrong. He does it to help you say sorry to Jesus.

Let's do it: Make a gentle "tap-tap" on your heart. That's like the Spirit saying, "Come talk to Jesus."

Middles 7–9

The Holy Spirit shows us when we've sinned. He doesn't do it to make us feel awful. He does it to lead us back to Jesus.

Let's talk: What's the difference between feeling ashamed, which says hide, and being convicted, which says come to Jesus?

Older 10–13

The Spirit "convicts" us. He reveals our real need so we'll run to the Savior. This is part of His work even before someone is saved.

Let's go deeper: Can you think of a time you felt that inner "tug" toward making something right? How can you respond to it next time?

You know that feeling right after you've done something wrong, before anyone even finds out? Where do you think that feeling comes from? For God's people, that's often the Holy Spirit, lovingly nudging us.

🛡️ Defending the Faith

How do we know the Holy Spirit is a real Person and not just a feeling? Jesus called Him "He," not "it." And He said the Spirit would teach, guide, and convict (). Those are things only a person can do. The Spirit who shows us our sin is the living God Himself at work.

For Dad · Go Deeper

Classic Pentecostal teaching takes the Spirit's personal, active work seriously. That includes this convicting ministry. And here's a vital parenting application. It is the Spirit's job to convict your children of sin, not yours. You teach. You discipline. You point to the cross. But you cannot manufacture a soft heart by piling on guilt. Trying will only produce kids who perform or hide. So pray for your children specifically. Ask the Holy Spirit to do what no amount of lecturing can. And guard the difference between conviction and condemnation in your own home. says "there is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus." The Spirit convicts to restore, never to crush.

Let's Pray Together

"Holy Spirit, thank You for being our kind Helper. You show us our need so we'll run to Jesus. When we feel that gentle tug inside, help us not to hide, but to come to You. Make our hearts soft and quick to repent. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

The Spirit shows me my sin, not to shame me, but to walk me straight to the Savior.
