Today's Scripture
Read together: Luke 23:44–46
44 It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over all the land until the ninth hour. 45 The sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn down the middle. 46 Then Jesus called out in a loud voice, “Father, into Your hands I commit My Spirit.” And when He had said this, He breathed His last.
Memory Verse
“For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,”— 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 (BSB)memorize this week

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 181 of 365 — the prophet Elisha and the God who heals.)The Heart of It
At noon, the sun is at its brightest. But on this day the sky went dark for three hours while Jesus hung on the cross. That darkness was not an ordinary storm. It was God marking the most important moment in all of history. The sinless Son of God was bearing the punishment our sins deserved. Then Jesus cried out, "Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit." And He breathed His last. No one took His life from Him. He laid it down willingly (). At that moment the veil in the temple tore in two, from top to bottom. That was God's way of saying the door to Him was now flung wide open.
This is the very center of everything we believe. Jesus did not die because He failed. He did not die because evil men were stronger than God. He died on purpose, for us, in our place. Every wrong thing we have ever done deserves to cut us off from a holy God. So Jesus stepped in and took it all. The cross was not a sad accident. It was the rescue God planned before the world began. When we look at the cross, we see exactly how serious our sin is. And we see exactly how deep God's love runs. He would rather die than live without us.
Around the Table
Jesus loves you so much. He died on the cross to take away all your bad things. And He chose to do it just for you!
Let's do it: Make a cross with two fingers and say together, "Thank You, Jesus, for loving me."
Jesus didn't have to die. He chose to. He died in our place so we could be forgiven. The torn temple curtain means we can come close to God now.
Let's talk: Why do you think the sky went dark when Jesus died?
Jesus said, "Into Your hands I commit My spirit." He gave up His life freely. No one took it by force. His death paid for our sin completely.
Let's go deeper: Jesus died "for our sins according to the Scriptures." What does it mean that God planned this long before it happened?

Has anyone ever taken the blame for you? Or paid for something so you wouldn't have to? How did that make you feel? That is a small picture of the cross.
🛡️ Defending the Faith
How do we know Jesus' death really happened? Even non-Christian historians wrote about it. Men like Tacitus and Josephus lived in the first and second centuries. They wrote that Jesus of Nazareth was executed under Pontius Pilate. The crucifixion is one of the most certain facts of ancient history. The question is never whether He died. The question is why.
For Dad · Go Deeper
It is easy to rush past the cross to get to the empty tomb. But your children need to feel the weight of Good Friday before they feel the joy of Easter. The resurrection only means something because of what the death accomplished: "Christ died for our sins." Spend a moment tonight letting that land in your own heart. Not as a doctrine you manage, but as a debt you could never pay being paid in full by Someone who loved you. The father who has been freshly stunned by the cross leads with tenderness instead of pressure. He leads out of forgiveness he himself has received.

Let's Pray Together
"Father, thank You that Jesus chose to die in our place. We are so sorry for our sin. We are so grateful for Your love. Help our family treasure the cross every day. In Jesus' name, amen."
Jesus didn't die because He was weak. He died because He loves me, on purpose, in my place.
