Jesus Walks With Two Friends

Month 7: He Is Risen! — Why We Believe · Bible Story

⏱ ≈ 12 min together

Today's Scripture

Read together: Luke 24:13–16, 30–32

13 That same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15 And as they talked and deliberated, Jesus Himself came up and walked along with them. 16 But their eyes were kept from recognizing Him. … 30 While He was reclining at the table with them, He took bread, spoke a blessing and broke it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Jesus—and He disappeared from their sight. 32 They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us as He spoke with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”

Look at My hands and My feet. It is I Myself. Touch Me and see—for a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”Luke 24:39 (BSB)memorize this week

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Isaiah 15–18

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 195 of 365 — Isaiah's words about the nations around Israel.)

The Heart of It

On the very first Easter, two heartbroken friends were trudging the seven miles to a village called Emmaus. They had hoped Jesus was the one to rescue Israel. And now He was dead. As they talked it all over, a stranger fell into step beside them. He was Jesus Himself, risen and alive, but "their eyes were kept from recognizing Him" (). For miles He opened the Scriptures to them. He showed them how Moses and the prophets had pointed all along to a Christ who would suffer and rise. Then, at supper, He took bread. He blessed it and broke it. And suddenly their eyes were opened. They knew Him. And He was gone.

What a tender picture of our risen Lord. He didn't come in lightning and thunder. He came alongside two ordinary, discouraged friends and walked their road with them. He met them in their sadness. He fed their minds with the Word. He showed them who He was in the breaking of bread. "Were not our hearts burning within us," they said, "as He spoke with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?" (). The same risen Jesus still walks with His people through the Scriptures today. When the Bible warms your heart, that is no accident. It is the living Christ drawing near.

Around the Table

Littles 3–6

Two sad friends were walking. Then Jesus, alive again, walked right beside them! Jesus is never far away.

Let's do it: Walk in place together and say, "Jesus is alive and walks with me!"

Middles 7–9

The friends felt their hearts burn when Jesus explained the Bible. God's Word does that when the risen Jesus opens it up to us.

Let's talk: When has a Bible story made your heart feel happy or excited inside?

Older 10–13

From Moses and the prophets, Jesus showed that the Christ had to suffer and rise. The whole Old Testament was pointing to this all along.

Let's go deeper: Why does it matter that Jesus' resurrection was promised hundreds of years before it happened?

💬 Conversation Starter

Have you ever not recognized someone you knew well, until they did something familiar? What suddenly jogged your memory? For these two friends, it was Jesus breaking the bread.

🛡️ Defending the Faith

How do we know this really happened? Luke names a real road. He names a real distance. He even names one of the men, Cleopas. A made-up legend wouldn't bother to include little details like that. When someone says the resurrection is just a story, gently point out that the Gospels read like eyewitness reports, not fairy tales ().

For Dad · Go Deeper

Notice how Jesus discipled these two. He started with their confusion. Then He walked them through the whole storyline of Scripture until it pointed to Himself. That is exactly your job at this table. Not to dump information, but to walk alongside your kids and keep showing them how every page leads to Jesus. You don't have to manufacture the burning heart. That is the Spirit's work as the Word is opened. Your part is simply to keep opening it, faithfully, mile after mile. Some of your most important fathering happens not in big lectures, but in the unhurried walking and talking of ordinary days.
