The Spirit Helps Us Pray

Month 8: Talking with God — The Praying Family · Walking in the Spirit

⏱ ≈ 12 min together

Today's Scripture

Read together: Romans 8:26-27

26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know how we ought to pray, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groans too deep for words. 27 And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

Memory Verse

Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.Matthew 7:7 (BSB)

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: 2 Kings 22–23; 2 Chronicles 34–35

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Young King Josiah finds God's Word and leads a nation back to prayer.)

The Heart of It

Have you ever felt something so big you couldn't find the words for it? Maybe you wanted to pray but didn't even know what to say. God knew we'd feel that way, so He gave us a wonderful Helper. "The Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know how we ought to pray, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groans too deep for words" (). The Holy Spirit is God living inside everyone who belongs to Jesus. And He actually helps us pray. When our words run out, He carries our prayers to the Father for us. You are never on your own when you pray.

This is part of the Spirit-filled life we've been learning about all year. The Spirit doesn't just help us be kind and brave. He helps us talk to God. And He prays for exactly the right things, because "the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God" (). The Spirit knows the Father's heart perfectly, so He never prays for the wrong thing. That means even our clumsy, half-finished, tired prayers get help from God Himself. So we never have to think, "My prayer wasn't good enough." When God's Spirit lives in you, He turns even your weakest words into prayers the Father loves to hear.

Around the Table

Littles 3–6

When you don't know what to say to God, the Holy Spirit helps you! You're never alone when you pray.

Let's do it: Whisper, "Holy Spirit, help me pray," then say one thank-you to God together.

Middles 7–9

Sometimes feelings are too big for words. The Spirit helps carry those prayers to God for us.

Let's talk: Has there been a time you wanted to pray but didn't know how? The Spirit was ready to help.

Older 10–13

The Spirit prays for us according to the will of God. He prays the right things through us, and He lines our hearts up with the Father's.

Let's go deeper: How does knowing the Spirit helps you pray take the pressure off "getting prayer right"?

When has something felt too big or too sad to put into words? The Holy Spirit can help you pray even then!

🛡️ Defending the Faith

Why believe the Holy Spirit is really a Person and not just a "force"? Because a force can't help you, can't know God's mind, and can't pray for you. But says the Spirit does all three. Only a Person can pray for you. Scripture treats Him as God Himself, living within His people.

For Dad · Go Deeper

Classic Pentecostal teaching holds that the Spirit's help in prayer is real and present today. For many believers, that includes praying in the Spirit beyond their own understanding (). But notice Paul's tone here. This is comfort for the weak, not a badge for the strong. The point of isn't spiritual achievement. It's that a struggling, wordless saint is never praying alone. Resist any teaching that turns Spirit-empowered prayer into a status symbol or a performance. Teach your family that the Helper meets us at our weakest. And let them see you lean on Him when your own faith feels thin. A Spirit-filled prayer life is marked by character and humble dependence, not by display.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, thank You for the Holy Spirit, our Helper. He prays with us and for us, even when we have no words. Lead our hearts to want what You want. We ask in Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

I'm never alone when I pray. God's own Spirit helps me, even when I don't have the words.
