The Heart of It

This week we've climbed through the Lord's Prayer one line at a time. Today we reach the last requests, the ones about us. "Give us this day our daily bread" (v. 11) teaches us to depend on God for everyday needs. We depend on Him for food, clothes, a roof, and strength for today. Notice it says daily. It's not a year's supply hoarded away. It's enough for today, asked for again tomorrow. God wants us to lean on Him every single day. We're like the Israelites who gathered fresh manna each morning. "And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one" (v. 13) teaches us to depend on God for protection. We ask Him to keep us out of traps that would hurt us. We ask Him to rescue us from the enemy who wants to pull us away from God.

So as a family, let's notice the whole beautiful shape of this prayer. It begins with God. It begins with His name, His kingdom, and His will. Then it brings us. It brings our needs, our forgiveness, and our protection. That order is the secret. When we put God first, our own needs land in exactly the right place, held safely in a good Father's hands. Many old Bibles end the prayer with the words, "For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen." It finishes the way it started, with worship. We come to God needy, but we leave Him praising. Tonight, let's pray this prayer slowly, all together, and mean every word.

Around the Table

Littles 3–6

God gives us what we need each day. He gives us food, hugs, and safety. And He keeps us from yucky things that would hurt us.

Let's do it: Name three things God gave you today. Then say, "Thank You, God! Keep us safe!"

Middles 7–9

"Daily bread" means trusting God for what we need today, and asking again tomorrow. He's a Father who provides.

Let's talk: Why do you think Jesus said "daily" instead of asking for everything all at once?

Older 10–13

"Lead us not into temptation, deliver us from the evil one" reminds us that the Christian life is a real battle. We need God's help to stand ().

Let's go deeper: What's one temptation you face often? How could praying this line each morning help you?

💬 Conversation Starter

What's your favorite kind of "daily bread"? Is it actual bread, rice, tortillas, or something else? God cares about the everyday stuff, even your dinner!

🛡️ Defending the Faith

If God already knows our needs (), why ask? Because prayer isn't about informing God. It's about trusting Him. Asking daily builds the relationship. It reminds us where every good gift really comes from (). A loving Father invites the conversation, even when He already knows.

For Dad · Go Deeper

The full sweep of this prayer is a discipleship curriculum in six lines. First comes God-centered worship. Then comes our dependence on Him: provision, pardon, and protection. As a family worship day, this is a chance to pray the whole prayer together slowly. You might go line by line, with each child praying one petition in their own words. Resist any prosperity twist on "daily bread." Jesus deliberately keeps it modest and daily, training contentment and trust, not accumulation. And take the petition about temptation seriously. Your home is on a real spiritual battlefield, and a praying father is a protecting father. Cover your kids in prayer by name tonight. Ask God to lead and deliver each one.

Let's Pray Together

"Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come, Your will be done. Give us today what we need. Forgive us our sins. Lead us away from temptation, and keep us safe from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

I can trust my Father for today's bread, today's mercy, and today's protection, and I can praise Him through it all.
