Shining Before Our Father

Month 9: Guard Your Heart — Becoming Like Jesus · Family Worship

⏱ ≈ 14 min together

Today's Scripture

Read together: Matthew 5:14-16 & Psalm 34:5

14 You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they set it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. — Matthew 5:14-16
5 Those who look to Him are radiant with joy; their faces shall never be ashamed. — Psalm 34:5

Memory Verse

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.Matthew 5:8 (BSB)

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Daniel 1–3

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Daniel and his friends shine for God in a foreign land — three of them even in a fiery furnace!)

The Heart of It

Today is a day to slow down, worship together, and let two beautiful pictures sink in. Jesus says, "You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden." And the psalmist adds something tender: "They looked to Him and were radiant, and their faces were not ashamed" (). Did you catch how the light gets there? People become radiant. They shine. And it happens by looking to God. We don't make our own glow by trying hard. We turn our faces toward our Father, like a flower turning to the sun. Then His light reflects off us onto the world.

Our reading today gives us a living example. Daniel and his three friends were far from home in Babylon. They kept their hearts pure and their faces turned toward God. They did it even when it meant a den of lions or a fiery furnace. Their light couldn't be hidden. Through them, a pagan king came to praise the living God. That's exactly what Jesus described: good lives that make people glorify "your Father in heaven." As we worship together today, remember why we guard our hearts at all. It's not to be rule-keepers. It's so that, looking to our good Father, our family becomes a little city on a hill. We become a warm, steady light in a dark world, pointing everyone home to Him.

Around the Table

Littles 3–6

When we look at God, He makes our faces shine, like Daniel's did! Let's worship Him together.

Let's do it: Look up, smile big, and sing a worship song you know as a family.

Middles 7–9

Daniel and his friends shone for God even in a scary place. How did they keep their light shining?

Let's talk: Where is one "dark" place you could shine for Jesus this week? Maybe a hard situation, or a sad friend.

Older 10–13

People become radiant by looking to God, the way Daniel did in Babylon. The light is reflected, not something we make ourselves.

Let's go deeper: How does "looking to God" actually change a person from the inside so they shine on the outside?

💬 Conversation Starter

Tell about a time you saw someone whose face just seemed to "glow" with joy. What do you think was going on inside them?

🛡️ Defending the Faith

Did Daniel and his friends really exist, or is it just a story? Daniel names real kings, real cities, and real customs of Babylon. Historians and archaeology have confirmed them. And Jesus Himself spoke of "Daniel the prophet" as a real person (). Their courage stands on solid history. ( — always ready to give a reason.)

For Dad · Go Deeper

Family worship is where this whole month either takes root or stays theory. The aim of "guard your heart" is worship. It's a household whose faces are turned toward the Father, radiant and unashamed (). Notice that you cannot command radiance. You can only lead your family to look at the One who gives it. So make these family worship rhythms gentle and unhurried, not another performance to grade. Sing even if you can't sing well. Pray honestly. Let your kids see Dad looking to God, not just talking about Him. Daniel's parents are unnamed, but somebody discipled those boys before Babylon ever tested them. The conviction that survived the furnace was forged at home first. That is your calling this week. Build light into them now, before the world tries to put it out.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, we turn our faces to You today. Make us radiant with Your light, like Daniel and his friends. Wherever we go, let our family shine and let people praise You. Keep our hearts pure, so that we may see You. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

I don't make my own light. I look to my Father, and He makes me shine.
