⏱ ≈ 13 min together

Today's Scripture

Read together: Genesis 2:18, 21–24 & Ephesians 5:31

18 The LORD God also said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make for him a suitable helper.” … 21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep, and while he slept, He took one of the man’s ribs and closed up the area with flesh. 22 And from the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man, He made a woman and brought her to him. 23 And the man said: “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for out of man she was taken.” 24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. — Genesis 2:18,21-24
31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” — Ephesians 5:31

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Matthew 27–28

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time.

The Heart of It

Family did not start with a government, or a culture, or a clever human plan. It started with God, in a garden, on the sixth day of creation week. God made everything and called it "good." Then He looked at the man, who was alone, and He said something surprising. "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make for him a suitable helper" (). So God formed the woman. He brought her to Adam. And He gave us the very first family, a husband and a wife joined together, the soil out of which children would grow. Marriage and family are not leftovers of evolution. They are an original idea straight from the heart of God, built into the world on purpose from the very beginning.

That's why families work best the way God designed them. When Jesus was asked about marriage, He went straight back to this passage in Genesis and treated it as real history. "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife" (see ; ). The One who designed something knows how it is meant to run, the same way the maker of a car knows what fuel it needs. So when God tells children to honor and obey their parents, He isn't being bossy. He is the original Designer, telling His creation how to flourish. Honoring your family is living with the grain of how the world was actually made.

Around the Table

Littles 3–6

Who made the very first family? God did! He thought of moms, dads, and kids before anyone else ever did.

Let's do it: Name each person in our family out loud and say, "God made us a family on purpose!"

Middles 7–9

God made families in the garden, on the sixth day — families were His idea, not ours.

Let's talk: What's one good thing about our family that you're really thankful for?

Older 10–13

Jesus pointed back to as true history when He taught about marriage and family ().

Let's go deeper: If God designed family, why would His instructions for it actually be good news instead of restrictions?

🛡️ Defending the Faith

When someone says, "Family is just a human invention, so you can define it however you want": We can answer kindly and confidently. We believe family is God's design, not a human invention. The Maker of people would naturally know best how people are meant to live (). Jesus Himself treated this account as real history (). A designed thing works best the way its maker intended. In the same way, families thrive when they follow God's blueprint. That is exactly what the evidence of strong, stable homes tends to show. We hold this with gentleness and respect (), inviting others to consider that God's design is for our good, not our harm.

For Dad · Go Deeper

The cultural pressure to treat family as endlessly redefinable is enormous, and your kids will feel it long before they can put it into words. quietly anchors everything. Family is rooted in a real creation by a wise Designer. That is precisely why honor, marriage, and parenthood carry real weight, instead of being just arbitrary preferences. This is why the young-earth, real-history reading of Genesis matters so practically. If the garden is a myth, then family is just sociology. If it is history, then family is sacred. Help your children see that biblical morality isn't a cage. It is a description of reality, written by the One who made it. They'll defend what they understand, and they'll love what they see modeled.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, thank You for inventing family in the very beginning. You designed us, so You know what is best for us. Help us trust Your good design. Help us live the way You made us to live. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

Family was God's idea first. So His way of doing it is the path to real joy.
