Looking Back: Knowing the God Who Made Us

Month 1: In the Beginning — Knowing God · Family Worship

⏱ ≈ 12 min together

Today's Scripture

Read together: Psalm 8 & Genesis 1:1

1 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth! You have set Your glory above the heavens. 2 From the mouths of children and infants You have ordained praise on account of Your adversaries, to silence the enemy and avenger. 3 When I behold Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have set in place— 4 what is man that You are mindful of him, or the son of man that You care for him? 5 You made him a little lower than the angels; You crowned him with glory and honor. 6 You made him ruler of the works of Your hands; You have placed everything under his feet: 7 all sheep and oxen, and even the beasts of the field, 8 the birds of the air and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. 9 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth! — Psalm 8
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. — Genesis 1:1

Memory Verse

And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”Genesis 3:15 (BSB)

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Genesis 48–50

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 29 of 365 — Jacob blesses his sons and Joseph forgives his brothers as Genesis closes.)

The Heart of It

Today we pause and look back over a whole month of knowing God. We started right where the Bible starts: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" (). In six real days, He spoke light, sky, sea, stars, and living things into being. Then He made people. He made us fearfully and wonderfully, stamped with His own image. David watched the night sky, and he was so amazed he had to sing: "When I behold Your heavens... what is man that You are mindful of him?" (). The God who flung the stars into place bends down to know us by name. That is who we have been getting to know all month.

But we also learned the sad truth. Sin came in, and the world broke (). And right there, in the darkest moment, God made a promise. A Rescuer would come and crush the serpent's head (). So as we look back, we see the whole shape of the gospel already taking form. There is a good Maker. There is a fallen world. And there is a faithful God who will not abandon what He made. Knowing this God isn't just collecting facts about Him. It's letting our hearts rest in the One who made us on purpose. He knows us completely. And He loved us enough to promise a Savior before we ever drew a breath.

Around the Table

Littles 3–6

All month we learned that God made everything, and God made YOU. He loves you so much that He promised to send a Rescuer.

Let's do it: Shout your favorite thing God made this month. Then give God a big "Thank You!" clap.

Middles 7–9

Look back at the month. God made it all. He made you on purpose. Sin broke the world. And God promised a Savior. What was your favorite thing you learned about God?

Let's talk: Which is easier to believe: that God made everything, or that He still cares about you? Why?

Older 10–13

holds two truths together. God is unimaginably great. And He is mindful of us. The Maker of galaxies stooped down to make a promise of rescue in .

Let's go deeper: How should knowing God this way shape the way you talk to Him? And how should it shape the way you treat yourself when you fail?

💬 Conversation Starter

Go around and each say one thing you now know about God that you didn't really think about a month ago.

🛡️ Defending the Faith

How do we know there's a Maker behind it all? and creation itself give us the clue. Order, beauty, and design don't appear out of nothing by accident. A painting points to a painter. And a universe made this carefully points to God. When someone asks why you believe, you can point them to the heavens above. You can also point them to the Bible's true record ().

For Dad · Go Deeper

A month of "knowing God" can quietly become a month of merely learning information about God, if we're not careful. And your kids will absorb which one it is by watching you. The point of through 3 is not merely that your children can recite a young-earth timeline or win an argument. It's that they meet a Person. He is both far above us, as shows, and near to us. In He comes looking and asks, "Where are you?" Tony Evans often reminds fathers that we cannot give away what we do not have. So before you lead the review tonight, ask yourself a question. Has this month grown my own wonder? Awe is caught more than taught. Let your kids see a dad who is still genuinely amazed that the God of the stars knows his name.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, thank You for letting us know You. You made everything, and You made us. Even when we broke the world, You promised a Rescuer. Keep our hearts amazed at how great You are. And thank You that You stay so close to us. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

The God who made the stars is mindful of me. And He has been all along.
