The Spirit Gives Us Boldness

Month 11: Standing Firm in a Tough World · Walking in the Spirit

⏱ ≈ 13 min together

Today's Scripture

Read together: Acts 4:29-31

29 And now, Lord, consider their threats, and enable Your servants to speak Your word with complete boldness, 30 as You stretch out Your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of Your holy servant Jesus.” 31 After they had prayed, their meeting place was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.

Memory Verse

But in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give a defense to everyone who asks you the reason for the hope that is in you. But respond with gentleness and respect,1 Peter 3:15 (BSB)

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: John 6–7

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 305 of 365 — Jesus, the Bread of Life, and rivers of living water.)

The Heart of It

The early Christians had just been arrested and threatened by the most powerful leaders in Jerusalem. They were ordered to stop talking about Jesus. So how did they pray? They didn't pray, "Lord, keep us safe," or "Lord, make the threats stop." They prayed, "Lord… enable Your servants to speak Your word with complete boldness" (). They asked for courage, not comfort. And God answered right away. "Their meeting place was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly" (). We've been talking about this same boldness all month. Being ready to give a reason. Standing firm. It is not something we squeeze out of ourselves. It's a gift the Holy Spirit pours into us.

This is the heart of the Spirit-filled life. Jesus never asked us to be brave on our own willpower. He sends the Holy Spirit to fill us with the very power we need to witness for Him (). Maybe you feel shy, or scared, or too small to stand for Jesus. That's not the end of the story. That's exactly when you can ask the Spirit to fill you fresh. Notice, too, how their boldness showed up. They "spoke the word of God." Spirit-given courage isn't loud showing-off or rude arguing. It's the calm strength to keep loving people and pointing them to Jesus, even when it would be easier to stay quiet. And the goal is never noise or attention. The goal is faithfulness. The Spirit grows Christlike character in us at the very same time He gives us power.

Around the Table

Littles 3–6

When you feel too scared to talk about Jesus, the Holy Spirit can make your heart brave!

Let's do it: Hand on your heart: "Holy Spirit, make me brave to talk about Jesus today!"

Middles 7–9

The disciples asked God for boldness, not safety. And He filled them with His Spirit. We can ask too.

Let's talk: When have you felt nervous to mention Jesus or pray? What could you ask the Holy Spirit for next time?

Older 10–13

They prayed for courage, and the Spirit filled them on the spot. Boldness to witness is a gift the Spirit gives. It isn't just your personality.

Let's go deeper: What's the difference between Spirit-given boldness and just being a loud, pushy person?

If you could ask God for one superpower to help you stand for Him at school, what would you pick? Being braver, being kinder, or being smarter? And why?

🛡️ Defending the Faith

How do we know the Holy Spirit really empowers ordinary believers? Look at the change in the disciples themselves. These men hid in fear when Jesus was arrested. Then they became preachers who would not stay silent even under threat. And it happened right after they were filled with the Spirit (). That kind of change needs an explanation. The best one is the very thing they claimed: God's Spirit came upon them.

For Dad · Go Deeper

Classic Pentecostal teaching understands the baptism in the Holy Spirit as a real empowering for mission. It is available to every believer, your children included (; 2:39). shows it isn't a one-time event we file away. The same people were already filled at Pentecost, yet here they are filled again for fresh courage. So we keep asking. But guard the heart of it. The aim is never spiritual performance or hype. The Spirit who makes us bold is the same Spirit who grows love, gentleness, and self-control (). Character over gifting, always. And here's the searching question. Are you leading your family in a boldness you actually possess, or one you merely admire? You cannot give your kids a Spirit-filled courage you aren't asking God for yourself. Pray over your own week.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, like the first disciples, we don't just ask for safety. We ask for boldness. Fill us fresh with Your Holy Spirit. Make us brave and kind to speak for Jesus. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

I don't have to make my own courage. I can ask the Holy Spirit to fill me with it.
