Today's Scripture

Read together: Genesis 12:1–5

1 Then the LORD said to Abram, “Leave your country, your kindred, and your father’s household, and go to the land I will show you. 2 I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you; and all the families of the earth will be blessed through you.” 4 So Abram departed, as the LORD had directed him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran. 5 And Abram took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, and all the possessions and people they had acquired in Haran, and set out for the land of Canaan. When they came to the land of Canaan,

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Exodus 4–6

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 31 of 365 — Moses meets the God who keeps His word.)

The Heart of It

One day God spoke to a man named Abram. He said, "Leave your country, your kindred, and your father's household, and go to the land I will show you." Notice what God did not say. He didn't hand Abram a map. He didn't give him a list of cities or a finish line. He simply made a promise and said, "Go." Abram had to leave his home, his comfort, and everything familiar. He had to trust the promise, even though he couldn't see the plan. And the Bible tells us plainly: "So Abram departed, as the LORD had directed him" (). No arguing. No stalling. He packed up and went.

This is where the whole rest of the Bible turns. God chose one ordinary family to bless. And through that family He promised to bless "all the families of the earth." That promise points all the way forward to Jesus, who would be born from Abram's line. From the very start, our God is the God who makes the first move. He spoke first. He promised first. He loved first. Abram didn't earn the promise by being great. God said, "I will make you into a great nation." Everything good in Abram's life flowed out of being chosen and loved by a God who keeps His word.

Around the Table

Littles 3–6

God told Abram, "Go!" And Abram trusted God and went, even though he didn't know the way.

Let's do it: Hold hands and walk across the room with your eyes closed while someone leads you. God leads us like that!

Middles 7–9

God made a big promise to Abram before Abram did anything to deserve it. That's called grace.

Let's talk: What's something God asks us to do, even when we can't see how it will turn out?

Older 10–13

God's call to Abram begins His rescue plan for the whole world. It's a plan that leads straight to Jesus ().

Let's go deeper: Abram obeyed before he understood. When is it actually wise to obey first and understand later?

💬 Conversation Starter

If God said "pack one bag and follow Me somewhere new," what's the one thing you'd grab? Abram had to leave almost everything behind.

🛡️ Defending the Faith

How do we know Abram was a real person and not a legend? His family, towns, and travels match real places and customs from that exact time and region. Archaeology has uncovered them. And Jesus Himself spoke of Abraham as real history ().

For Dad · Go Deeper

Abram's call is the pattern of every life of faith. God speaks a promise, and we move on the strength of His character before we can see the outcome. Dad, your kids are watching to see whether you live like the promises are reliable. Do you make decisions based on what God has said? Or only on what you can calculate? Faith isn't recklessness. It's reasoned trust in a God who has proven faithful. The same God who said "Go" to Abram has spoken clear promises to you in Scripture. Lead your home by anchoring to those, not to the shifting ground of feelings or fears.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, You are the God who calls us, and You keep every promise. Help our family trust Your word, even when we can't see the whole plan. And make us a blessing to others, like Abram was. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

God spoke His promise first. I follow because I'm already loved, not to earn His love.
