Letting Your Light Shine Out There
Month 11: Standing Firm in a Tough World · Loving Others
Today's Scripture
Read together: Matthew 5:14-16
14 You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they set it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Memory Verse
“Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.””— Joshua 1:9 (BSB)

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. The Heart of It
Jesus didn't say, "You should be the light of the world." He said, "You are the light of the world" (). If you belong to Jesus, you already carry His light. The only question is whether you hide it or let it shine. And Jesus is clear about which one He wants. "Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house" (v. 15). A tough world is not a reason to dim down and blend in. It's exactly the dark room a light is for.
But notice how the light shines. "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven" (v. 16). It's not loud arguing. It's not showing off how religious we are. It's good works. Kindness. Honesty. Patience. Helping the kid no one else helps. These are the things that make people look up and wonder about our Father. And catch that last word. The goal is that God gets the glory, not us. We don't shine to be admired. We shine so people are drawn to the One who lit us. Standing firm and loving others are not opposites. A steady, kind life in a hard place is one of the brightest lights there is.
Around the Table
Jesus says you are a little light! When you're kind, people see God's love shining out of you.
Let's do it: Turn off the lights, then click on a flashlight and say, "That's me shining for Jesus!"
We shine our light by doing good. We are kind, and honest, and helpful, so others want to know our Father in heaven.
Let's talk: What is one good work you could do this week that would make someone curious about Jesus?
Light shines through good works, not just words. And the goal is that God gets the glory, not us. A steady, kind life is a powerful witness.
Let's go deeper: Where is it hardest for you to shine? What would it look like to let your light out there anyway?

🛡️ Defending the Faith
How do we know Christianity is true and not just nice ideas? One clue is the fruit. All across history the gospel has built hospitals, ended cruelties, and changed hard people into gentle ones. Real light leaves real warmth behind it ().

There's a quiet trap here for sincere families. We can try to make our kids the light by pulling them away from the dark world. And we end up hiding under a basket called "us four and no more." But a lamp is made to give light "to all who are in the house." That means our children need to actually be among people who don't yet know Jesus. Your task is to raise kids who are distinct without being aloof. Firm in what they believe, warm in friendship. That balance is caught more than it is taught. So let your family see you shine out there. Let them watch how you treat the cashier, the difficult neighbor, the coworker who annoys you. The home is the lampstand where children first learn whether the light is real.

Let's Pray Together
"Father, thank You for making us light in a dark world. Help us shine through kind and honest lives. Not to be noticed, but so people would see our good works and give glory to You. In Jesus' name, amen."
I am already a light. Today I'll let it shine through kindness, so others see my Father.
