A Bold Heart Instead of a Fearful One
Month 12: On Mission & Finishing Well · Heart Matters
Today's Scripture
Read together: Acts 4:13, 29–31
13 When they saw the boldness of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they marveled and took note that these men had been with Jesus. … 29 And now, Lord, consider their threats, and enable Your servants to speak Your word with complete boldness, 30 as You stretch out Your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of Your holy servant Jesus.” 31 After they had prayed, their meeting place was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.
Memory Verse
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.””— Acts 1:8 (BSB)

Today's reading: Acts 25–26
Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 341 of 365 — Paul: "I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision.")The Heart of It
When the rulers saw Peter and John speaking up for Jesus, they were amazed. These were "uneducated and untrained men." Then Luke gives us the secret. "They realized that they had been with Jesus" (). The boldness did not come from a course in public speaking. It did not come from being naturally brave. It came from time spent with Jesus, and from being filled with His Spirit. The rulers threatened them and ordered them to stop. But they did not pray for the danger to go away. They prayed, "Lord… grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word." And the place was shaken. They were filled again. And they spoke God's word with boldness.
Here is the heart matter for your family. God does not usually take our fear away first and then send us. He gives us Himself right in the middle of the fear, and He makes us bold as we go. Boldness in the Bible is not loudness, and it is not being pushy. It is an open-hearted freedom to speak the truth in love, even when it might cost us. And notice what they asked for. They did not ask for safety. They asked for courage. A fearful heart says, "What if they laugh at me?" A bold heart, filled with the Spirit, says, "Lord, help me speak anyway." That kind of heart is not something you are born with. It is given, to anyone humble enough to ask.
Around the Table
Peter and John were brave to talk about Jesus because they spent time with Him. We can be brave too!
Let's do it: Stand up tall. Then say in a strong, kind voice, "Jesus is my friend!"
They didn't pray for the scary people to leave. They prayed for courage to keep speaking. And God answered right away.
Let's talk: What is something a little scary about telling a friend you love Jesus? What could you pray for instead of an escape?
Their secret weapon was that "they had been with Jesus." Boldness flows out of being near Him and being filled with the Spirit. It does not come from a natural personality.
Let's go deeper: When you feel afraid to stand for Jesus, you can ask for courage instead of asking for the hard situation to disappear. What would change if you did?

Who is the bravest person you know? Was their bravery about not being scared? Or was it about doing the right thing even while they were scared?
🛡️ Defending the Faith
The sudden change in the apostles is itself good evidence. These men fled when Jesus was arrested. Now they were risking prison rather than stay quiet about Him. People do not change from cowards into fearless witnesses over a story they invented and know is false. Something real had to stand them up.

Watch how the early church handles opposition. They don't strategize their way out of it. And they don't grow timid. Instead, they pray for boldness, and they are freshly filled with the Spirit (). This is the repeatable, normal Christian life. It is Spirit-empowered courage for witness, given again and again as we need it. For a busy father, the application is searching. Our children rarely catch our courage from lectures. They catch it from watching us speak naturally about Jesus to a neighbor, a cashier, a relative. And they catch it from hearing us pray, out loud, for boldness rather than ease. The home that prays raises kids who expect God to make them brave. Character grows here too. This boldness is always paired with humility and love. It is never swagger.

Let's Pray Together
"Lord, like Peter and John, we have been with You. Make us bold to speak Your word with love. Fill us again with Your Spirit. Turn our fearful hearts into brave hearts. In Jesus' name, amen."
God doesn't wait until I'm unafraid to send me. He fills me with courage as I go.
