The Spirit Stays Close to Us

Month 2: The God Who Keeps Promises · Walking in the Spirit

⏱ ≈ 13 min together

Today's Scripture

Read together: John 14:16–17

16 And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot receive Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you do know Him, for He abides with you and will be in you.

Memory Verse

Look, I am with you, and I will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”Genesis 28:15 (BSB)

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Leviticus 16–18

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 49 of 365 — the Day of Atonement, pointing to Jesus our covering.)

The Heart of It

God promised Jacob, "I am with you… I will not leave you" (). But Jacob only experienced that closeness in special moments. A dream. A wrestling match. Then Jesus came and promised something even more wonderful. He said the Father would send "another Helper, that He may abide with you forever — the Spirit of truth… for He dwells with you and will be in you" (). God would not just be with us in certain places. He would be in us, all the time, forever. The Holy Spirit is how God's old promise to never leave us became God living inside every person who belongs to Jesus.

This is the heart of the Spirit-filled life. And it is gentle good news for a busy family. The Holy Spirit is a Person. He is not a feeling. He is not a force. Jesus calls Him "another Helper." That means one just like Jesus Himself. He reminds a child of a memory verse at just the right moment. He nudges a heart to say sorry. He gives quiet courage. He grows real fruit like love and patience (). Jacob once said, "Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it." Today, because of Jesus, we can know it for certain. God is not just in this place. By His Spirit, He lives in His people. We never walk alone.

Around the Table

Littles 3–6

Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to be God's Helper, living right inside us — He never goes away!

Let's do it: Hands on heart: "Holy Spirit, thank You for always being with me!"

Middles 7–9

Jacob only felt God near sometimes. The Holy Spirit lives in God's people all the time.

Let's talk: What might the Holy Spirit help you do today that would be hard on your own?

Older 10–13

Jesus called the Spirit "another Helper" who stays with us forever. God's promise to never leave us is now permanent and personal.

Let's go deeper: How is having the Spirit in you different from God simply being near you?

💬 Conversation Starter

Who is someone you would want with you on a really hard day? The Holy Spirit is even closer than that. He lives right inside God's people.

🛡️ Defending the Faith

Isn't the "Holy Spirit inside me" just my own conscience? No. A conscience can't give you power to forgive an enemy. It can't give you peace in real grief. It can't give you boldness to tell others about Jesus. Changed lives that go beyond what we can do on our own point to a real Person at work (). And we can explain that hope gently ().

For Dad · Go Deeper

Classic Pentecostal teaching treasures this truth. At the new birth the Spirit comes to dwell in us. And Jesus also wants to fill us with that same Spirit for power and witness (). Both are gifts. Both flow from grace. Robert Menzies stresses that the Spirit's empowering is missional. It is meant to equip ordinary believers, including your children, to live and speak for Jesus. But the aim is never spiritual performance or hype. The aim is Christlikeness, "the fruit of the Spirit" grown quietly over years. So here is the searching question for you tonight. Are you leading your home in your own willpower, or in His presence? You cannot give your children a walk in the Spirit you aren't walking yourself. Ask the Father to fill you afresh ().

Let's Pray Together

"Father, thank You for sending the Holy Spirit to live in us forever. Fill us again today. Grow Your good fruit in us. Help us walk close to You. Thank You that we are never, ever alone. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

God's old promise was "I will not leave you." Now it lives inside me by His Spirit, forever.
