Very Good! Praising the Maker

Month 1: In the Beginning — Knowing God · Family Worship

⏱ ≈ 14 min together

Today's Scripture

Read together: Psalm 8

1 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth! You have set Your glory above the heavens. 2 From the mouths of children and infants You have ordained praise on account of Your adversaries, to silence the enemy and avenger. 3 When I behold Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have set in place— 4 what is man that You are mindful of him, or the son of man that You care for him? 5 You made him a little lower than the angels; You crowned him with glory and honor. 6 You made him ruler of the works of Your hands; You have placed everything under his feet: 7 all sheep and oxen, and even the beasts of the field, 8 the birds of the air and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. 9 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!

The Heart of It

We've spent a week getting to know our Maker. He made it all. He made us in His image. His Spirit was there from the start. And He calls every person valuable. Today is our Family Worship day. We don't just learn about God. We respond to Him with praise. King David did exactly that in . He looked up at the night sky, at "the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars." And he was filled with wonder. He was amazed at how big God is. And he was amazed that God still cares for small people like us. "What is man that You are mindful of him?" The right response to a great Creator is a heart bursting with worship.

Here's the beautiful turn in the psalm. The God who flung the stars into place also "crowned" people with honor. And He gave them a job, to care for His good world. We don't worship creation. We worship the Creator by enjoying what He made. So as your family looks back over the very good world God made, let your wonder spill over into praise. Sing. Say thank You. Name the things you love. This is what we were made for. We were made to know the Maker and to make His name "excellent in all the earth." End the week not with a checklist, but with a celebration.

Around the Table

Littles 3–6

God made the moon, the stars, the animals, and YOU — and it's all so good! Let's say "Thank You, God!" really loud.

Let's do it: Go around and each shout out one favorite thing God made, then cheer together.

Middles 7–9

David looked at the stars and felt amazed that God cares about people. What part of God's world makes you want to praise Him?

Let's talk: Worship means telling God how great He is. What's one true, great thing you can tell Him right now?

Older 10–13

holds two truths together: God is awesomely big, and He cares about you personally. Why do we worship the Creator instead of worshiping creation itself?

Let's go deeper: God gave humans the honor of caring for His world. What's one way your family could steward part of creation this week?

💬 Conversation Starter

If we threw a "Thank You, God, for creation" party, what would we put on the menu and the playlist? Then let's actually praise Him together right now!

🛡️ Defending the Faith

Why are humans different from the rest of creation? says God "crowned" us with honor and gave us care over His world. That's a special job no animal has. Deep down we sense that people are special and that life has meaning. That feeling fits a world made by God, not a world made by accident.

For Dad · Go Deeper

Family worship doesn't have to be polished to be real. It has to be steady and warm. This is your weekly rhythm to move the family from information to adoration. Read a psalm. Sing a song, even badly. Give thanks out loud. And let the kids hear you worship. models the right posture: humility before God's greatness, and gratitude for His personal care. Don't underestimate the discipling power of a dad who isn't embarrassed to praise God in front of his kids. Years from now, they may forget the individual lessons. But they will remember that worship was normal, joyful, and central in your home. Lead with delight, not duty.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, when we look at all You made, we are amazed. And we are even more amazed that You care about us. You are great, and Your name is excellent in all the earth! We praise You today. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

The God who made the stars knows my name. That is reason to praise Him all week long.
