Safe Under the Blood

Month 3: The Great Rescue · Walking in the Spirit

⏱ ≈ 13 min together

Today's Scripture

Read together: Exodus 12:21-23

21 Then Moses summoned all the elders of Israel and told them, “Go at once and select for yourselves a lamb for each family, and slaughter the Passover lamb. 22 Take a cluster of hyssop, dip it into the blood in the basin, and brush the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe. None of you shall go out the door of his house until morning. 23 When the LORD passes through to strike down the Egyptians, He will see the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe and will pass over that doorway; so He will not allow the destroyer to enter your houses and strike you down.

Memory Verse

The blood on the houses where you are staying will be a sign; when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No plague will fall on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.Exodus 12:13 (BSB)

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Deuteronomy 5–7

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time.

The Heart of It

Picture an Israelite family on Passover night. The lamb's blood is on the door. They've gathered inside, and the door is shut. Outside, they can hear something terrible moving through Egypt. Were they afraid? Maybe a little. But here's the wonderful thing. Their safety did not depend on how brave or calm they felt inside. It depended entirely on the blood outside. A worried child trembling in the corner was just as safe as a calm grandmother. The blood was the sign God promised to honor, not their feelings.

This is exactly how the Spirit-filled life begins and breathes. When we trust Jesus, His blood covers us. And the Holy Spirit comes to live inside us as God's seal and guarantee (). On the days our faith feels strong, we are safe under the blood. On the days we feel weak and afraid, we are just as safe under the same blood. And the Spirit inside us whispers, "You belong to the Father. You're His child" (). Walking in the Spirit doesn't mean always feeling fearless. It means resting in what Jesus has done. It means letting His Spirit calm our hearts. It means obeying from a place of safety instead of panic. We don't work to get inside the door. We live, and rest, and obey, because we are already inside.

Around the Table

Littles 3–6

The family was safe inside because of the blood on the door — not because they were brave. Jesus keeps us safe!

Let's do it: Snuggle close and say, "I'm safe with Jesus." Take a slow, calm breath together.

Middles 7–9

Even a scared child behind that door was just as safe as anyone else. Our safety is in Jesus, not in our feelings.

Let's talk: When you feel scared, what's the true thing you can remind yourself about Jesus?

Older 10–13

The Holy Spirit lives in everyone who trusts Jesus. He keeps reassuring us that we belong to God, even when our feelings wobble.

Let's go deeper: How is resting "under the blood" different from trying to earn God's protection by feeling or doing the right things?

When you're tucked safely in bed at night, do you feel safer than you do during a thunderstorm? You're just as safe either way. And so are we under Jesus' blood, no matter how we feel.

🛡️ Defending the Faith

Some say faith is just "feeling positive." But true faith doesn't rest on our mood. It rests on a fact outside of us. The fact is blood on a door, and Christ on a cross. That's why a frightened believer is just as safe as a confident one. The ground of our safety is what God did, and God doesn't change ().

Pentecostal teaching rightly emphasizes the Spirit's power. But that power must always be anchored to the Spirit's witness. That witness is His quiet work, assuring believers that they belong to God. says "the Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God." Many sincere Christians, including our kids, ride their feelings like a roller coaster. On the low days, they conclude God has left them. Teach them early that the Spirit's first work is not goosebumps. It is assurance, grounded in the finished work of Christ. Character over feelings, and rest over striving. A child who learns this won't be ruled by emotions. And he won't chase the next spiritual high just to feel saved.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, thank You that we are safe under the blood of Jesus, even on days we feel weak or afraid. Holy Spirit, remind our hearts that we belong to You. Help us rest and obey from that safe place. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

My safety rests on Jesus' blood, not on how I feel. So I can be at peace even when I'm afraid.
