Trusting God When We're Afraid
Month 3: The Great Rescue · Heart Matters
Today's Scripture
Read together: Exodus 14:10-13
10 As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up and saw the Egyptians marching after them, and they were terrified and cried out to the LORD. 11 They said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us into the wilderness to die? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt? 12 Did we not say to you in Egypt, ‘Leave us alone so that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.” 13 But Moses told the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the LORD’s salvation, which He will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians you see today, you will never see again.

Today's reading: Deuteronomy 24–27
Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 78 of 365 — blessings and warnings spoken over God's people.)The Heart of It
Before the sea opened, the people fell apart. They were terrified, and they cried out to the LORD. Then they turned on Moses. "Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us into the wilderness to die?" they said. "It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness" (). Fear made them forget every plague. It made them forget every wonder. It made them forget the very God who had just freed them. That is what fear does to all of us. It shrinks God and swells the problem, until the danger looks bigger than the Rescuer. The honest truth is that even rescued people get scared. God is not surprised or angry that your kids feel afraid.
Watch Moses' answer. "Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the LORD's salvation" (). He doesn't scold their fear away. He points their eyes somewhere new. Fear says, "Look at the army." Faith says, "Look at the LORD." We don't beat fear by trying to feel braver. We beat it by turning our eyes to a bigger God. This is the gospel rhythm. We are not loved because we are fearless. We become brave because we are loved and safe. Teach your children tonight that being afraid is not a sin. But where we look when we are afraid shows what we really believe.
Around the Table
When you feel scared, you can look to God — He is big and strong and right beside you.
Let's do it: Name one thing that scares you, then say together, "But God is bigger!"
The people looked at the scary army and forgot how great God is. Where do you look when you're afraid?
Let's talk: What helps you remember God is near when you're scared?
Fear isn't sin. But it tempts us to believe lies about God, like "He has forgotten me" or "this is too big."
Let's go deeper: Find one promise of God to look at the next time fear hits. Write it down.

What is something that used to scare you when you were little that doesn't scare you anymore? You grew. And our trust in God grows the same way.
🛡️ Defending the Faith
The Bible never pretends believers are always calm. It records God's people panicking, doubting, and crying out. That honesty is a mark of a true book. Made-up heroes are perfect. Real ones get afraid and are still saved by grace.
For Dad · Go Deeper
Dad, your kids will mostly learn how to handle fear by watching how you handle it. When the bill, the diagnosis, or the unknown comes, what do they see? Do they see you look at the army, anxious and snappish, scrolling for control? Or do they see you stand firm and watch for the salvation of the LORD? Paul Tripp reminds us that our anger and anxiety usually expose what we are trusting in besides God. The goal isn't a home where no one ever feels afraid. It's a home where fear becomes a doorway to prayer. Let your children catch you bringing your real worries to the Father out loud. That teaches more than a hundred lectures on courage.

Let's Pray Together
"Father, when we are afraid, help us look at You instead of our fears. Thank You that we don't have to be brave on our own. You are with us. And You are bigger than anything we face. In Jesus' name, amen."
Being afraid isn't the problem. Where I look when I'm afraid is what matters most.
