The Spirit Helps Us Tell the Truth
Month 4: The Teacher (Part 1) · Walking in the Spirit
Today's Scripture
Read together: Matthew 5:33-37 & John 16:13
33 Again, you have heard that it was said to the ancients, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill your vows to the Lord.’ 34 But I tell you not to swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 or by the earth, for it is His footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 Nor should you swear by your head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black. 37 Simply let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ Anything more comes from the evil one. — Matthew 5:33-37
13 However, when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak what He hears, and He will declare to you what is to come. — John 16:13
Memory Verse
“In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”— Matthew 5:16 (BSB)
📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)
Today's reading: 1 Chronicles 15-17
Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 109 of 365 — the ark comes to Jerusalem with joy, and God promises David an everlasting throne.)The Heart of It
In Jesus' day, people made fancy promises to prove they were telling the truth. They would swear "by heaven," or "by the earth," or even "by my own head." But Jesus said a follower of His shouldn't need all that. He said, "Let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No.'" The idea is beautiful and simple. Be the kind of person whose plain word is so trustworthy that you never have to dress it up. No crossed fingers. No exaggerating. No half-truths that sneak around the truth. Just honesty so steady that people can lean on it.
But here is the hard part. Being truthful all the time is hard. We are tempted to bend the truth when honesty might get us in trouble. We are tempted to stretch a story to look better. That is exactly where the Holy Spirit comes in. Jesus called Him "the Spirit of truth" who "will guide you into all truth" (). The same Spirit who is truth lives inside everyone who belongs to Jesus. He grows truthfulness in us like fruit on a tree. Have you ever felt a little nudge to come clean? Or a quiet check right before a lie slips out? That is often the Spirit of truth at work. We don't become honest by gritting our teeth and trying harder. We become honest as we lean on the One who is Truth, living inside us.
Around the Table
Jesus wants our "yes" to mean yes and our "no" to mean no. He wants us to always tell the truth. And God's Helper helps us do it!
Let's do it: Play "Yes means yes!" Say some silly true or false things, like "The sky is green!" Then shout the honest answer.
We shouldn't need to swear or cross our hearts. Our plain word should be enough to trust. And the Spirit of truth helps us.
Let's talk: When is telling the truth the hardest for you? How could you ask the Holy Spirit for help in that moment?
Jesus wants us to have integrity. That means being the same person in private as in public, so your plain word is enough. The Spirit of truth grows this in us.
Let's go deeper: What's the difference between trying to be honest by sheer willpower and being made honest as fruit of the Spirit?

Has anyone ever broken a promise to you? How did it feel? And what happens to a friendship when you can trust someone's word completely?
🛡️ Defending the Faith
Christianity doesn't just say "be honest by trying harder." It says something bigger. God Himself, the Spirit of truth, comes to live in believers. He grows honesty from the inside out. A faith that changes who we are, not just what we do, points to a real and present God ().

The fruit of the Spirit () is exactly that. It is fruit, not something we manufacture. Truthfulness, like love or patience, grows as we walk in step with the Spirit. It does not come from gritting our teeth. This is the Spirit-filled life applied to the smallest, most daily thing of all: our words. As a father, teach your kids that the Holy Spirit isn't only for big spiritual moments. He's the everyday Helper who whispers "tell the truth" and gives the strength to do it. And let them see you choose the costly honesty. Own a mistake. Admit "I don't know." Refuse the convenient half-truth. You cannot disciple your children into a Spirit-led integrity you aren't pursuing yourself. Ask Him today to fill you afresh and make your word reliable.

Let's Pray Together
"Father, You are the God of truth. Your Spirit lives in us. Help our family always tell the truth. Let our yes mean yes. Let our no mean no. Help us tell the truth even when it is hard. In Jesus' name, amen."
The Spirit of truth lives in me. So my plain word can be trusted, with no promises to dress it up.
