Today's reading: Genesis 34-36

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 11 of 365 — God renews His promises to Jacob.)

The Heart of It

Mary's "yes" cost her something. Saying yes to God meant the risk of being misunderstood. It meant whispers in a small town. It meant a life turned upside down before she ever held her baby. And yet her answer was clear. "I am the Lord's servant. May it happen to me according to your word." Then she did not complain about the cost. Her heart overflowed instead. "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior." Notice she calls Him "my Savior." Mary knew she needed saving too. Her song is the song of a humble heart that trusts God more than it fears the unknown.

Here is the heart matter for us. Surrender is not losing. It's trusting. Mary didn't say yes because she had all the answers. She said yes because she knew the One who did. Real faith doesn't wait until everything makes sense. It bows to a good God in the middle of the mystery. Every one of us faces these moments. Sometimes obeying God will cost us comfort, or popularity, or our own plans. The question is the same one Mary answered. Will I yield to His word, or only my own?

Around the Table

Littles 4–7

Mary said "Yes, God!" even when it was a little bit scary. Saying yes to God makes our hearts happy.

Let's do it: Practice a big, happy "Yes, God!" with your hands raised high.

Middles 8–10

Mary trusted God even though her life got harder. Trusting God isn't the same as everything being easy.

Let's talk: When is it hardest for you to obey? Is it when you're tired, when no one's watching, or when friends are doing something else?

Older 11–14

Mary surrendered her plans and her reputation, and then she worshiped. Surrender to God is freedom, not loss. She even called God "my Savior." Mary knew she needed saving too.

Let's go deeper: Where is God asking you to say "May it happen to me according to Your word" right now? And what's holding you back?

🛡️ Defending the Faith

Some honor Mary so highly that they treat her as sinless or as someone we pray to. But Mary herself rejoiced in "God my Savior" (). She needed a Savior, just like all of us (). We honor Mary as a beautiful example of faith, and we worship the Son she carried.

For Dad · Go Deeper

The Magnificat () is the spontaneous worship of a teenager soaked in Scripture. It echoes Hannah's song and the Psalms throughout. That tells you something about discipleship. What fills the heart spills out under pressure. Mary's surrender was beautiful in the moment because her heart had been formed long before the moment arrived. As a father, you are not just managing behavior tonight. You are filling young hearts with truth that will one day pour out when life squeezes them. And let Mary's free, faith-filled "yes" remind you that God dignifies our wills. He invites our surrender. He doesn't override it. Grace woos. It doesn't bulldoze. Model a willing yes, and your children will learn the shape of it from you.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, give us hearts like Mary's. Give us hearts that say yes to You even when it's hard. Help us trust You more than we fear the cost. We rejoice in God our Savior. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

Saying yes to God isn't losing. It's trusting the One who knows what I cannot see.
