Treasure Worth Everything

Month 6: Stories Jesus Told · Bible Story

⏱ ≈ 12 min together

Today's Scripture

Read together: Matthew 13:44-46

44 The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and in his joy he went and sold all he had and bought that field. 45 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls. 46 When he found one very precious pearl, he went away and sold all he had and bought it.

Memory Verse

His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into the joy of your master!’Matthew 25:21 (BSB)memorize this week

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Psalms 80-83

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 172 of 365 — "Restore us, O God; cause Your face to shine" — a people aching to be brought back.)

The Heart of It

Jesus told two tiny stories that fit in a single breath. A man is walking through a field, and he trips over buried treasure. He is so thrilled that he sells everything he owns just to buy that field. Then a merchant who hunts for fine pearls finally finds the one perfect pearl. He too sells all he has to get it. Both men give up everything. But notice how they feel in the stories. Nobody is groaning. Nobody is counting the cost with a sad face. The man buys the field "for joy." He isn't losing. He is trading up. He found something so good that letting go of the rest felt like the easiest bargain of his life.

That's the kingdom of heaven, Jesus says. Belonging to God is the treasure worth more than anything else you could ever hold. It means being forgiven, being loved, and being given a forever home with Him. Following Jesus does cost something. He never hid that. But it is the happiest trade a person ever makes. What you receive is worth so much more than what you give up. When a child grasps this, obedience stops feeling like a list of rules. It starts feeling like guarding something precious. We don't follow Jesus because we have to. We follow Him because we have seen the treasure, and our hearts have said, "Yes. That. Whatever it takes."

Around the Table

Littles 4–7

A man found hidden treasure and was SO happy he traded everything to keep it! Jesus is treasure even better than gold.

Let's do it: "Hide" a small treasure (a coin or toy) under a cloth, "find" it together, and cheer, "Jesus is worth more than this!"

Middles 8–10

Both men gladly gave up everything. They weren't sad about it. They did it for joy, because what they found was worth so much more.

Let's talk: What is something you would happily trade all your other stuff to keep? And why is Jesus worth even more than that?

Older 11–14

Following Jesus costs us things, but it is never a bad deal. We let go of lesser things to gain the greatest Thing. That's why the man bought the field "for joy" (v. 44).

Let's go deeper: What might Jesus be asking you to "sell" to hold the treasure more freely? It could be a habit, a grudge, or a fear.

💬 Conversation Starter

If you found a real treasure chest in our backyard, what's the first thing you'd do? Would you tell anyone, or keep it secret like the man in the story?

🛡️ Defending the Faith

People sometimes say Christianity is just about "giving things up." But Jesus describes it as finding treasure so good you would gladly trade everything for it (). That's not loss. It is the best gain a heart can know.

For Dad · Go Deeper

These twin parables answer a question your kids will absolutely ask someday. Is following Jesus worth it? Jesus' answer is not duty but desire: "for joy he goes and sells all that he has." The Christian life is not mainly about subtraction, about what I surrender. It is about supremacy, about the One I gain. Thomas Chalmers called this "the expulsive power of a new affection." You don't pry lesser loves out of a heart by sheer willpower. They get pushed out when a greater love moves in. Your children will not be argued into treasuring Christ, and they certainly won't be nagged into it. They will catch it. So the searching question for tonight is whether you still treasure Him. Can your kids see it in your face and your choices? Can they see a man who has found the field and would buy it all over again? Lead from joy, not grim obligation.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, open our eyes to see how good You are. Make Jesus the greatest treasure of our hearts, so that following Him is our deepest joy and not a burden. Help us hold everything else loosely and hold You tightly. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

Jesus isn't what I give up. He's the treasure I get to keep forever.
