Set Free by the Stronger One
Month 7: The Miracle Worker · Walking in the Spirit
Today's Scripture
Read together: Mark 5:1-15
1 On the other side of the sea, they arrived in the region of the Gerasenes. 2 As soon as Jesus got out of the boat, He was met by a man with an unclean spirit, who was coming from the tombs. 3 This man had been living in the tombs and could no longer be restrained, even with chains. 4 Though he was often bound with chains and shackles, he had broken the chains and shattered the shackles. Now there was no one with the strength to subdue him. 5 Night and day in the tombs and in the mountains he kept crying out and cutting himself with stones. 6 When the man saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees before Him. 7 And he shouted in a loud voice, “What do You want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You before God not to torture me!” 8 For Jesus had already declared, “Come out of this man, you unclean spirit!” 9 “What is your name?” Jesus asked. “My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.” 10 And he begged Jesus repeatedly not to send them out of that region. 11 There on the nearby hillside a large herd of pigs was feeding. 12 So the demons begged Jesus, “Send us to the pigs, so that we may enter them.” 13 He gave them permission, and the unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs, and the herd of about two thousand rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the water. 14 Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. 15 When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons sitting there, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.
Memory Verse
“Overwhelmed with fear, they asked one another, “Who is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?””— Mark 4:41 (BSB)
📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)
Today's reading: Psalms 145-148
Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 192 of 365 — "The LORD upholds all who fall, and raises up all who are bowed down" — He lifts the most broken.)The Heart of It
The boat reaches the other shore, and the very first person to meet Jesus is the most broken man in the whole region. He lived among the tombs. He was so strong that no chain could hold him. He cried out night and day and cut himself with stones. He was tormented by many evil spirits, so many that they called themselves "Legion." No one could help him. Everyone had given up. But when he saw Jesus from far off, he ran and fell at His feet. And with a word, Jesus set him free. The story ends with the townspeople finding the man "sitting and clothed and in his right mind" (). The same Lord who spoke peace to the storm now speaks peace into a storm-tossed soul. There is no chaos that Jesus cannot calm, not outside us and not inside us.
Here's the thread that ties this to walking in the Spirit. The evil spirits knew that Jesus was stronger than they were, and they had to obey Him. Jesus once explained His power this way. When a stronger man overcomes the strong man guarding a house, he takes away the armor and frees the prisoners (). And Jesus said He cast out demons "by the Spirit of God" (). The same Holy Spirit who empowered Jesus' ministry now lives in everyone who belongs to Him. We don't have to be afraid of the dark, or of evil, or of the enemy. The One who lives in us is greater than the one in the world (). Walking in the Spirit means walking in the freedom and authority of the Stronger One. We don't walk in our own strength. We walk in His. Jesus came to set captives free, and He still does.
Around the Table
There was a man no one could help. But Jesus made him all better with just His words! Jesus is bigger and stronger than anything scary.
Let's do it: Flex your muscles and say it big, "Jesus is STRONGER!" Then sit calmly with your hands folded and say, "And Jesus makes us peaceful."
Even the evil spirits had to obey Jesus, because they knew He was stronger. We never have to be scared of the dark or of bad things, because Jesus is the strongest of all.
Let's talk: When something feels scary or "too big," how does it help to remember that Jesus is stronger than all of it?
Jesus cast out demons by the Spirit of God, and that same Spirit lives in believers. Walking in the Spirit means living in the freedom and authority Jesus won. We don't do it by our own power. We do it by His.
Let's go deeper: The man went from being someone no one could chain down to sitting calmly at Jesus' feet. What does real freedom look like? Is it doing whatever we want, or being free in Christ?

Who's the strongest person you can think of? Now imagine Someone stronger than every strong person put together. That's Jesus. What's one "too big" thing you'd hand to Him?
🛡️ Defending the Faith
Some say believing in evil spirits is just old superstition. But Jesus took evil seriously, and He showed that it was no match for Him (). The good news isn't that evil isn't real. It's that the Stronger One has already overcome it.
For Dad · Go Deeper
This passage sits in a healthy balance that classic Pentecostals hold well. Spiritual things are real, but Christ's victory over them is total. So there's no room for fear, and no room for fascination either. Avoid two ditches in your home. One is the modern idea that laughs off the demonic entirely. Jesus plainly did not see the world that way. The other is an unhealthy obsession that sees a devil behind every bush and grows anxiety instead of the peace of the gospel. The biblical posture is sober confidence. The enemy is real but defeated, and the same Spirit who empowered Jesus lives in your children. Notice that the deliverance ends not in spectacle but in a man "in his right mind." The fruit of the Spirit is wholeness, peace, and self-control, not chaos and hype. That's a vital correction against any ministry that prizes dramatic displays over Christlike character. Remember, character matters more than gifting. Teach your kids that the deepest freedom is not the absence of all hardship. It's a mind made whole and seated at Jesus' feet. And model dependence on the Spirit yourself. You fight your own battles with sin and fear not by willpower but by walking in step with Him ().

Let's Pray Together
"Lord Jesus, You are the Stronger One. Nothing is too powerful for You. Thank You that Your Spirit lives in us, so we never have to be afraid. Set us free from everything that binds us. Make our minds and hearts whole, resting at Your feet. In Jesus' name, amen."
The Stronger One lives in me. I walk free in His Spirit, not afraid.
