Month 7: The Miracle Worker · Memory Verse

⏱ ≈ 12 min together

Today's Scripture

Read together: John 6:32-35

32 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 “Sir,” they said, “give us this bread at all times.” 35 Jesus answered, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will never hunger, and whoever believes in Me will never thirst.

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Proverbs 8-11

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (In Proverbs 8, Wisdom herself calls out in the streets — and points us toward Christ, "the wisdom of God.")

The Heart of It

The day after the great feeding, the crowd came looking for more bread. They reminded Jesus that long ago Moses gave their ancestors manna in the wilderness. It was bread from heaven, fresh every morning. But Jesus gently corrected them. It wasn't Moses who gave that bread. It was His Father. And now the Father was giving something far greater. Jesus said, "The bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." The people were still thinking about their stomachs. They said, "Lord, give us this bread always." Then Jesus said the words we are learning this week: "I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst."

This is the very first of Jesus' great "I AM" sayings in John's Gospel. And it is a huge claim. Bread keeps your body alive for a day. Jesus keeps your soul alive forever. The manna in the desert ran out. It spoiled. And it only fed the body. But Jesus offers Himself. And look closely at how we receive Him. We come to Him, and we believe in Him. He doesn't say, "Only the people I picked will never hunger." He throws the door wide open. Anyone who comes to Him will be filled. Anyone who believes will be filled. That invitation is for you. It is for me. It is for every one of our children. The Bread of Life is offered for free. Our part is simply to come with open, hungry hands.

Around the Table

Littles 4–7

Bread fills up our tummies. But Jesus fills up our hearts, and He never runs out! He is the very best bread.

Let's do it: Pretend to take a big bite. Rub your tummy. Then say, "Jesus fills me up!"

Middles 8–10

Jesus said anyone who comes to Him will never be hungry in their heart. The verse says we should do two things. We should come. And what is the second one?

Let's talk: Let's say the verse together three times. Go a little faster each time, until we know it by heart.

Older 11–14

"I am the bread of life" is the first of seven "I AM" sayings in John. It echoes God's own name to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM." Jesus is claiming to be God.

Let's go deeper: Jesus says He fills the deepest hunger of the soul. So what "snacks" do people reach for instead? And why do those always leave us empty again?

What food could you eat every single day and never get tired of? Even your favorite food runs out in the end. But Jesus says He never does.

🛡️ Defending the Faith

Jesus didn't just point the way to God. He didn't only teach about life. He said, "I AM the bread of life." A wise teacher doesn't say, I am the thing your soul needs forever. Not unless it's actually true. His claim leaves us no middle ground ().

For Dad · Go Deeper

Memorizing with your kids does more than file away a sentence. It gives them a way to understand their own restlessness. Every human being is hungry for something. We hunger for approval. We hunger for achievement, for comfort, for control. And we spend our lives reaching for bread that spoils by morning. The beauty of this verse is that it names the hunger and names the cure in one breath. Plant it deep now, while they're young. Then years from now, when they feel that gnawing emptiness the world can't fill, the Spirit will have something true to bring to mind. And father, preach it to yourself first. That same restlessness drives you to overwork, to scroll, to chase the next thing. The Bread of Life is offered to you today. Come, and be filled.

Draws on: Augustine, Confessions ("our heart is restless until it rests in You").

Let's Pray Together

"Lord Jesus, You are the Bread of Life. Only You can fill the deep hunger in our hearts. Help our family come to You every day. Help us believe in You. Thank You that You welcome anyone who comes. That means You welcome us. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

Only Jesus, the Bread of Life, can fill the hunger that nothing else ever can.
