📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Jeremiah 12-14

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Jeremiah pleads with a stubborn nation, while one short verse in Luke holds the whole mission of Jesus.)

The Heart of It

Today's verse is small enough for a four-year-old to learn and big enough to hold the whole gospel. After Zacchaeus came down from the tree and welcomed Him, Jesus announced why He had come at all: "the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost." Three little words tell the story: seek, save, lost. We are the lost. Jesus is the One who seeks. And only He can save. Memorize it this way, and you'll always have the gospel in your pocket.

"The Son of Man" was Jesus' favorite title for Himself, and it comes from . The name means He is fully human, and the glorious King given an everlasting kingdom. This King didn't come to be served by us. He came to come after us. Notice He doesn't say He came to find the people already looking for Him. He came for the lost, the ones who weren't even searching. If that's ever been you, or someone you love, this verse is for you. No one is too far away for the Shepherd who goes after the one.

Around the Table

Littles 4–7

Say it with me in three claps: "Seek!" (clap) "Save!" (clap) "Lost!" (clap) Jesus came to find us!

Let's do it: Hide a small toy, then "seek" until you find it — and cheer the way heaven cheers when Jesus finds us.

Middles 8–10

Being "lost" means being far from God and not knowing the way home. Who is the only One who can bring us home?

Let's talk: Can you say the verse from memory? Try it three times, a little faster each time.

Older 11–14

"Son of Man" is a title for the divine King who receives an everlasting kingdom. And the very first thing this King did was to come and seek and save.

Let's go deeper: How does it change things to know that the King of the universe went looking for you before you ever looked for Him?

🛡️ Defending the Faith

People sometimes claim Jesus never said why He came. He did, plainly: "to seek and to save that which was lost" (). His own words give us His mission in a single sentence — and we can quote it with confidence ().

For Dad · Go Deeper

Hiding God's Word in the heart is not memory work for its own sake. It is loading the soul with truth the Spirit can bring back at exactly the right moment (; ). When your kids own , they carry a verse that answers the deepest question a person can ask: Why did Jesus come? Teach it with your whole family, and don't leave yourself out. Say it at the table, in the car, at bedtime. And let it preach to you, Dad. You don't have to perform your way into God's favor. The seeking love that found Zacchaeus is the same love that holds you. Lead from being found, not from striving to be worthy.

Let's Pray Together

"Jesus, thank You for telling us why You came. You came to seek us, and You came to save us. Keep these words in our hearts. Help us never forget how much You love us. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

Seek, save, lost. Three words that say Jesus came for me.
