Today's Scripture

Read together: Matthew 17:1-8

1 After six days Jesus took with Him Peter, James, and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 There He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light. 3 Suddenly Moses and Elijah appeared before them, talking with Jesus. 4 Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If You wish, I will put up three shelters —one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 5 While Peter was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to Him!” 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown in terror. 7 Then Jesus came over and touched them. “Get up,” He said. “Do not be afraid.” 8 And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.

The Heart of It

Six days after Peter's great confession, Jesus took Peter, James, and John up a high mountain. There something happened that those three men never forgot. Jesus was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became dazzling white, brighter than anyone on earth could bleach them (; ). For a few astonishing moments, the disciples saw with their eyes what was true all along but usually hidden. They saw the glory of the Son of God blazing out from inside His human body. The carpenter from Nazareth, the friend they walked dusty roads with, was shining with the light of heaven itself. Then Moses and Elijah appeared, talking with Him. The great lawgiver and the great prophet, both pointing forward to the One standing in light between them.

Peter was overwhelmed and not quite sure what to say. He offered to build three tents to hold the moment. But God the Father interrupted him with a bright cloud and a voice from heaven: "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!" (). It is one of only a few times in the Gospels that the Father speaks aloud. So notice what He says. He does not say, "Admire Him," or "Build for Him." He says, "Hear Him." Above Moses, above Elijah, above every other voice, listen to Jesus. The disciples fell on their faces, terrified. And Jesus, ever gentle, came and touched them and said, "Arise, and do not be afraid." When they looked up, the dazzling vision was gone, and they "saw no one but Jesus only" (). That is exactly where the Father wants every heart to land. He wants us seeing Jesus only, and ready to obey His voice.

Around the Table

Littles 4–7

One day Jesus' face shone bright like the sun on top of a mountain! Then God the Father spoke from a cloud. He said, "This is My Son. Listen to Him!"

Let's do it: Turn on a flashlight and shine it on your face, then say together, "Jesus shines! I will listen to Jesus!"

Middles 8–10

For a few minutes the disciples saw Jesus' hidden glory shining out. Why do you think God let them see this before the hard week in Jerusalem that was coming?

Let's talk: The Father said, "Hear Him!" What is one thing Jesus says in the Bible that you can listen to and obey this week?

Older 11–14

Moses gave the Law, and Elijah was the great prophet. They appeared with Jesus, then they vanished. They left Jesus only. The whole Old Testament was pointing to Him, and now the Father says to listen to the Son above all.

Let's go deeper: How does the transfiguration help us trust Jesus when the road gets dark? What did it show about who He really is, beneath what the eye can normally see?

What is the brightest light you have ever seen?Jesus shone brighter than the sun. And that was just a glimpse of His real glory!

🛡️ Defending the Faith

The transfiguration wasn't a private feeling. Three named men watched it on a real mountain. One of them, Peter, later wrote that they "were eyewitnesses of His majesty" (). The Christian faith rests on things people actually saw and heard, and we can share it confidently and gently ().

For Dad · Go Deeper

The timing of the transfiguration is pastoral genius. Jesus had just begun telling the disciples plainly that He must suffer and die (), and Peter had recoiled in horror. So before the agony of the cross, the Father pulls back the curtain and lets three witnesses see the Son's true glory. It became a memory to anchor their faith when everything later seemed to fall apart. Notice that the glory and the suffering belong together. Luke tells us Moses and Elijah spoke with Jesus about "His decease which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem" (). The shining Christ is the same Christ who set His face toward the cross. There is a fatherly lesson here for you. Your children will face their own dark valleys, and what carries them through will be a settled conviction of who Jesus is, formed in seasons of clear sight. The Father's command, "Hear Him!", is the whole aim of family worship. It is not to admire Jesus from a distance, and not to merely keep religious routines. It is to actually listen to the living Son and do what He says. Lead them to see "Jesus only," and then to obey.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, thank You for showing us the glory of Your beloved Son. Open our family's ears to truly hear Jesus above every other voice. Help us obey Him. And when the road is hard, remind us of who He really is. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

The Father pointed to Jesus shining on the mountain and said, "Hear Him!" So above every other voice, I will listen to the Son.
