Blessed Is He Who Comes

Month 9: The Road to Jerusalem · Family Worship

⏱ ≈ 14 min together

Today's Scripture

Read together: Luke 19:28–40

28 After Jesus had said this, He went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 As He approached Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, He sent out two of His disciples, 30 saying, “Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks, ‘Why are you untying it?’ tell him, ‘The Lord needs it.’” 32 So those who were sent went out and found it just as Jesus had told them. 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34 “The Lord needs it,” they answered. 35 Then they led the colt to Jesus, threw their cloaks over it, and put Jesus on it. 36 As He rode along, the people spread their cloaks on the road. 37 And as He approached the descent from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of disciples began to praise God joyfully in a loud voice for all the miracles they had seen: 38 “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 39 But some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples!” 40 “I tell you,” He answered, “if they remain silent, the very stones will cry out.”

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Hosea 9–11

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 268 of 365 — "When Israel was a child, I loved him" — the Father's tender heart.)

The Heart of It

Today we gather as a family to worship. And Luke gives us the perfect scene for it. Jesus sends two disciples for a colt. He tells them the owner will let it go, because "the Lord needs it." Then He rides into Jerusalem. A whole crowd of His followers spreads their coats on the road. They praise God with loud voices for all the mighty things they had seen. "Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!" Some Pharisees tell Jesus to quiet the crowd down. And Jesus says something amazing. "I tell you, if they remain silent, the very stones will cry out." Jesus is so worthy of worship that if people will not praise Him, even creation would.

This is the heart of family worship. We were made to praise the King. And the whole road to Jerusalem has been showing us why. He went looking for lost Zacchaeus. He rode a humble donkey, just as the prophets had said. He received Mary's poured-out love. He came in peace to seek and to save the lost. That is our verse this week. So today we let our own voices be the ones that cry out, so the stones do not have to. Worship is not a show to give God information. It is the joyful, fitting answer of hearts that have seen how good and how worthy Jesus is. Let your home be a place where the King is praised out loud.

Around the Table

Littles 4–7

Everyone shouted happy praises when King Jesus came! Jesus said if people stopped, even the rocks would shout. Let's be louder than the rocks!

Let's do it: March around the room waving "palm branches." You can use your hands or some paper. Shout, "Blessed is the King Jesus!"

Middles 8–10

Jesus said the stones would cry out if the people stayed quiet. That is how worthy He is of praise.

Let's talk: What is one mighty thing Jesus has done that you want to praise Him for today?

Older 11–14

The crowd praised God for all the mighty things they had seen. Worship grows out of remembering what Jesus has actually done.

Let's go deeper: Lead the family. Name three things God has done for our family this year. Then turn each one into a sentence of praise.

💬 Conversation Starter

If even the rocks would shout for Jesus, what is your favorite way to praise Him? Is it singing, or drawing, or dancing, or telling someone about Him?

🛡️ Defending the Faith

People sometimes say Jesus never let anyone worship Him as God. But here He welcomes the crowd's praise. And He says creation itself would worship Him (). Jesus knew He was receiving what only God should receive. He received it because He is God the Son.

For Dad · Go Deeper

Family worship does not require a stage or a perfect voice. It requires a father who will go first. Notice that the crowd praised God for all the mighty things they had seen. Gratitude is the fuel of worship, and remembering is the spark. So make remembering a regular rhythm in your home. Rehearse the answered prayers. Recall the recovered health, the needs God supplied, the gospel itself. The Puritan-influenced tradition long urged a simple pattern, and writers like Donald Whitney still recommend it today. It works wonders. Read a short passage, talk about it, sing one song, and pray. Do it imperfectly, but do it again and again. As Month 9 turns toward the cross, the goal this week is a home where the King is so treasured that no one needs to ask the stones to fill the silence. Close out "The Road to Jerusalem" by lifting your voices together.

Let's Pray Together

"King Jesus, You are worthy of all our praise. We have seen Your mighty works, and we will not be silent. Thank You for coming in peace to seek us and to save us. Make our home a place where Your name is loved out loud. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

If I keep silent, the very stones will cry out. So I will praise my King today.
