A Heart Ready to Serve
Month 10: The Upper Room · Walking in the Spirit
Today's Scripture
Read together: John 13:4-5 & Galatians 5:13
4 So He got up from the supper, laid aside His outer garments, and wrapped a towel around His waist. 5 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and dry them with the towel that was around Him. — John 13:4-5
13 For you, brothers, were called to freedom; but do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh. Rather, serve one another in love. — Galatians 5:13
Memory Verse
“A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you also must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.””— John 13:34-35 (BSB)
📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)
Today's reading: Micah 1-3
Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 275 of 365 — Micah confronts injustice and points to a coming Ruler from Bethlehem.)The Heart of It
Watch Jesus' hands in these two verses. He "got up from the supper, laid aside His outer garments, and wrapped a towel around His waist." Then He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet. In that day, washing feet was the lowest job in the house. It was a task for the most junior servant. The roads were dusty, and sandaled feet got truly filthy. The disciples had all walked in. None of them offered to do it. In fact, that very night they had been arguing about which of them was the greatest (). And into that proud, awkward silence, the Lord of glory stood up. He wrapped a towel around His waist. He got down on the floor. The greatest one in the room became the servant of the room.
Paul tells us how this works in our own lives. "You, brothers, were called to freedom... serve one another in love" (). Real freedom in Christ is not freedom to be waited on and spoiled. It is freedom to bend down and serve without being afraid of losing anything. We can do that because we are already safe in Jesus. That is what walking in the Spirit looks like in everyday life. Not big spiritual fireworks, but a heart that is ready to serve. The same Spirit who lives in believers grows this in us. He turns "what's in it for me?" into "how can I help?" A heart that is ready to serve does not wait to be asked. It looks around the room. It spots the dirty job nobody wants. It picks up the towel and goes to work in love.
Around the Table
Jesus did the dirtiest job in the house. He washed dusty feet, because He loves to help. We can be little helpers too!
Let's do it: Find one helping job right now. You could carry a plate or pick up toys. Do it with a smile.
Jesus had ALL the power, and He used it to serve. Walking in the Spirit means looking for ways to help.
Let's talk: What is a job at home that nobody likes to do? Could you surprise someone by doing it this week?
Galatians says true freedom is the freedom to serve one another in love. The Spirit reshapes our hearts, so we go from wanting to be served to wanting to serve.
Let's go deeper: Where does the world tell you greatness comes from? How is Jesus' picture of greatness completely upside down?

🛡️ Defending the Faith
In the ancient world, your status was everything. So the idea that the powerful should serve the lowly was shocking. Yet this servant-hearted teaching spread, and it reshaped whole cultures. That is a quiet sign of how powerful Jesus' example really is.
For Dad · Go Deeper
shows service as fruit, not force. "Serve one another in love" sits in the same chapter as the fruit of the Spirit (5:22-23). That order matters. Service that runs on willpower alone sours into resentment or quiet pride. Service born of the Spirit flows from a heart already at rest in Christ's love. So the first question for you is not "am I serving my family enough?" It is "am I being filled enough?" A dad running on empty serves with a sigh. A dad walking in the Spirit picks up the towel with joy. Ask the Father today to fill you fresh. Then let your kids actually see you do a low, unglamorous job at home without being asked. They learn servant-leadership far more from your towel than from your lectures.

Let's Pray Together
"Holy Spirit, fill us today. Make us free to serve. Keep us from being too proud to help. Make us quick to pick up the jobs no one else wants, just like Jesus picked up the towel. Grow Your love in us. In Jesus' name, amen."
A heart filled with the Spirit doesn't wait to be served. It picks up the towel.
