Trust God, Trust Also in Me
Month 10: The Upper Room · Walking in the Spirit
Today's Scripture
Read together: John 14:1-4
1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe in Me as well. 2 In My Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and welcome you into My presence, so that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”
Memory Verse
“Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”— John 14:6 (BSB)
📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)
Today's reading: Zechariah 6-8
Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (God promises to dwell with His people again — "I have returned to Zion.")The Heart of It
The disciples' hearts were sinking. Jesus had just spoken of betrayal, of denial, of going away. Into that fear Jesus says the gentlest command in the Bible: "Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me." He does not scold them for being afraid. He gives their fear somewhere to go. He turns it straight into trust. And He gives them a picture to hold onto. He says, "In My Father's house are many mansions… I go to prepare a place for you." Jesus is not abandoning them. He is getting their home ready. He promises, "I will come again and receive you to Myself."
Here is where walking in the Spirit becomes real, everyday life. Peace is not pretending things are fine. Peace is choosing to trust the Person who is in charge of the things we can't control. The fruit of the Spirit is peace (). And the Spirit grows it in us right when life feels shaky. He grows it when we deliberately set our hearts on Jesus instead of on our fears. A heart can be "troubled." Or a heart can "believe." We don't always get to choose what happens to us. But with the Spirit's help, we can choose where we look. Today, when worry rises, you can do what Jesus said. You can turn it into trust.
Around the Table
Jesus said, "Don't let your heart be scared. Trust Me!" He is getting a home ready for us.
Let's do it: When you feel scared today, whisper, "I trust You, Jesus," and take a slow breath.
Jesus did not say, "Stop feeling scared." He said, "Trust Me with it." What is the difference between hiding your fear and handing it to Jesus?
Let's talk: What is one worry you can hand to Jesus right now?
Peace is a fruit of the Spirit. It is not a mood that just shows up. The Spirit grows it in us as we choose to trust Christ.
Let's go deeper: How can you "trust on purpose" when your feelings are screaming the opposite?

🛡️ Defending the Faith
"Believe also in Me," Jesus says. He places trust in Himself right alongside trust in God. No mere prophet or good teacher would dare say that. Jesus keeps inviting the kind of trust that is owed only to God. That fits His claim to be God in the flesh.
For Dad · Go Deeper
"Let not your heart be troubled" is a command. That tells us peace is, in part, a matter of obedient trust, not just emotional weather. But it is never white-knuckle willpower. It is life in the Spirit. The Spirit produces peace as His fruit (), and He is given to comfort us (). Notice the order tonight. Jesus addresses the heart's fear before He explains the future. The cure for anxiety is not more information. It is a trustworthy Person. Dad, your kids learn to walk in the Spirit's peace largely by watching how you carry pressure. When the bills, the diagnosis, or the unknown comes, do they see you preach this verse to your own heart? Lead them by trusting out loud.

Let's Pray Together
"Father, when our hearts are troubled, help us turn to You and trust. Thank You, Jesus, for preparing a home for us. Holy Spirit, grow Your peace in us today. In Jesus' name, amen."
I can't control everything, but I can trust the One who can. And His peace will guard me.
