The Spirit Gives Bold Words

Month 11: The Cross & the Empty Tomb · Walking in the Spirit

⏱ ≈ 13 min together

Today's Scripture

Read together: Luke 12:11-12 & Matthew 26:63-64

11 When you are brought before synagogues, rulers, and authorities, do not worry about how to defend yourselves or what to say. 12 For at that time the Holy Spirit will teach you what you should say.” — Luke 12:11-12
63 But Jesus remained silent. Then the high priest said to Him, “I charge You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God.” 64 “You have said it yourself,” Jesus answered. “But I say to all of you, from now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.” — Matthew 26:63-64

Memory Verse

But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.Isaiah 53:5 (BSB)

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: John 17-20

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (John carries us from Jesus' great prayer all the way to the cross and the empty tomb.)

The Heart of It

Jesus once made His friends a promise for the hardest moments. "When they bring you to the synagogues and magistrates and authorities, do not worry about how or what you should answer... For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say" (). When you're dragged before powerful people, you don't have to scramble for clever words. God's own Spirit will help you. And on the very night this promise would matter most, Jesus showed it Himself. He stood before the high priest, under threat of death. He was asked point-blank if He was the Christ. He didn't dodge. He answered with calm, towering boldness. "It is as you said. Nevertheless... hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven."

Here's the encouraging truth for your family. The same Holy Spirit who filled Jesus is the Helper Jesus sends to us. Remember Peter? Just hours before, he crumbled at a servant girl's question. But after Pentecost, filled with the Spirit, that same Peter stood before the very council that condemned Jesus. He declared, "There is no other name under heaven... by which we must be saved" (). What changed Peter wasn't more willpower. It was the Holy Spirit. When you're nervous to speak up about Jesus at school or with a friend, you are not alone. You are not fighting in your own strength. You can quietly ask, "Holy Spirit, give me the right words." And you can trust Him to help, right in that very hour.

Around the Table

Littles 4–7

Sometimes it's scary to talk about Jesus. But Jesus sends His Helper, the Holy Spirit, to give us brave words right when we need them!

Let's do it: Hand on your heart and pray: "Holy Spirit, help me be brave to talk about Jesus."

Middles 8–10

Jesus promised the Holy Spirit would teach us what to say when we're put on the spot. And Jesus showed us how. He spoke bold truth even in front of people who wanted to hurt Him.

Let's talk: When is it hardest for you to speak up about Jesus? How could the Holy Spirit help you in that moment?

Older 11–14

At the courtyard fire, Peter was afraid. But at Pentecost, and later before the council, that same Peter was fearless. The difference was the filling of the Holy Spirit. Bold witness is a gift of the Spirit, not a personality type.

Let's go deeper: Bold witness comes from the Spirit's help, not from your own confidence. Why is that a freeing thing to know?

💬 Conversation Starter

When have you wanted to say something good, but felt too nervous? How might it change things to ask the Holy Spirit for help before you speak?

🛡️ Defending the Faith

What turned terrified disciples into fearless witnesses willing to die? Something real happened. They met the risen Jesus, and they were filled with the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Cowards don't suddenly choose to die for a story they made up. The boldness of the early church points to a true resurrection and a real Spirit.

For Dad · Go Deeper

is not a license for laziness in preparation. It is a promise of the Spirit's help in the pressure of the moment. It sits at the heart of classic Pentecostal teaching on Spirit-empowered witness. The same Spirit who anointed Jesus and emboldened Peter is available to fill your children for the mission of bearing witness in their generation. But notice the order. Spirit-given boldness flows from Spirit-formed character. The goal is never showy courage. It is faithful, loving truth-telling. Ask yourself honestly. Am I praying for my children to be filled with the Spirit, not merely well-behaved? Teach them to ask the Father for the Spirit's help (). And let them see you lean on Him too, especially in conversations where you'd rather stay silent about Christ.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, fill us with Your Holy Spirit. Give us brave and gentle words to speak about Jesus, just like He did. Help us trust You in the very moments when we feel afraid. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

I don't have to find brave words alone. The Holy Spirit gives them in the very hour I need them.
