Mary Hears Her Name
Month 12: Risen & Sending · Heart Matters
Today's Scripture
Read together: John 20:11-18
11 But Mary stood outside the tomb weeping. And as she wept, she bent down to look into the tomb, 12 and she saw two angels in white sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and the other at the feet. 13 “Woman, why are you weeping?” they asked. “Because they have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I do not know where they have put Him.” 14 When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there. But she did not recognize that it was Jesus. 15 “Woman, why are you weeping?” Jesus asked. “Whom are you seeking?” Thinking He was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried Him off, tell me where you have put Him, and I will get Him.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”). 17 “Do not cling to Me,” Jesus said, “for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go and tell My brothers, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, to My God and your God.’” 18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them what He had said to her.
Memory Verse
“He is not here; He has risen, just as He said! Come, see the place where He lay.”— Matthew 28:6 (BSB)
📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)
Today's reading: 2 Corinthians 8-10
Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Paul on generous giving: "God loves a cheerful giver," and "you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor.")The Heart of It
Everyone else has run home, but Mary Magdalene stays. She stands outside the tomb weeping. She is so blinded by grief that when she sees angels she barely reacts. And when the risen Jesus Himself stands in front of her, she thinks He is the gardener. Imagine that. The One she is crying for is standing right beside her, and her tears keep her from seeing Him. Then Jesus speaks one word. "Mary." Just her name. And instantly she knows. She turns and cries out, "Rabboni!" That means my Teacher. He did not give a sermon. He did not list the proofs of the resurrection. He simply said her name in the voice she had heard a hundred times, and the dark morning broke open into joy. This is a Heart Matters day because of what it tells us about how Jesus meets us. He meets us personally, by name, in the middle of our weeping.
Remember what Jesus had said earlier. "The sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name... and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice" (). Mary is living proof. The risen Lord is not a distant idea or a force in the universe. He is a Person who knows you. He knows your name, your tears, your fears that He is gone. Your children need to feel this in their bones. Jesus is not only alive. He is alive toward them. He notices the child crying in the dark. He comes close before we even recognize Him. And the same Savior who turned Mary's mourning into a message ("Go to My brethren," v. 17) wants to meet each of your kids personally and then send them out with the news. The resurrection is not just true in general. It is for you, by name.
Around the Table
Mary was so sad that she didn't know it was Jesus. Then He said her name, "Mary!" And she was so happy! Jesus knows YOUR name too.
Let's do it: Go around and have Dad say each child's name softly, and have them answer, "Jesus knows my name!"
Mary was looking right at Jesus, but she didn't see Him, because she was so sad. Then He said one word. He said her name. And that changed everything.
Let's talk: When you are really upset, is it sometimes hard to notice that Jesus is near? What might help you remember He is right there?
Jesus calls His sheep by name. Mary did not know Him by how He looked. She knew Him by His voice saying her name.
Let's go deeper: What is the difference between knowing about Jesus and being known by Jesus?

What does it feel like when someone you love says your name in a happy voice?— That is how Mary felt when Jesus said, "Mary."
🛡️ Defending the Faith
The Gospels don't describe the risen Jesus as a glowing, obvious figure. Mary mistakes Him for a gardener. Others fail to know Him at first too. Made-up heroes are usually instantly dazzling. These honest, almost awkward details read like memory, not myth.

There is a tenderness in this scene that our theology must never lose. We can be so eager to defend the facts of the resurrection that we forget the risen Christ is deeply personal. He did not appear first to kings or crowds. He came to a grieving woman. And He healed her not with arguments but with her own name. This matters for how you father. Your children will meet plenty of religion that is all rules and information. What their hearts ache for is to be known. The classic Christian writers spoke of true religion as the heart's affections stirred by God. It is not mere head-knowledge. It is a love that answers Love. Ask yourself honestly. Does your family's faith feel like a relationship with a Person who knows them by name? Or does it feel like a system to be managed? Mary's "Rabboni!" is the cry of a heart that has been found. Pray your children would each have a moment like that.

Let's Pray Together
"Lord Jesus, thank You that You are alive. Thank You that You know each of us by name. When we are sad and can't see You, speak our names and turn our crying into joy. Help us know You, not just know about You. In Your name, amen."
The risen Jesus knows my name. He comes close in the dark and turns my tears to joy.
