Taken Up into Heaven
Month 12: Risen & Sending · Family Worship
Today's Scripture
Read together: Acts 1:9-11
9 After He had said this, they watched as He was taken up, and a cloud hid Him from their sight. 10 They were looking intently into the sky as He was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 11 “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into heaven.”
Memory Verse
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, even to the end of the age.””— Matthew 28:19-20 (BSB)

Today's reading: Revelation 10-13
Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 362 of 365 — the kingdoms of this world become the Lord's.)The Heart of It
After Jesus speaks these last words, He is lifted up before their very eyes. A cloud comes and hides Him from their sight. This is the Ascension. It is not Jesus vanishing into thin air. It is not Jesus simply going invisible. He is being enthroned. The risen Lord goes up to take His seat at the Father's right hand. That is the place of all authority. It is the very authority He claimed in . The disciples stand there staring up into heaven, and who can blame them? But the story doesn't end with Jesus far away. It ends with Him reigning, and with His people sent out.
The Ascension answers a question kids feel deeply. If Jesus is alive, where is He now? He is not in a grave. He is not a ghost. He is in heaven, ruling over everything. He is praying for His people (). And He is present with us by His Spirit. That is why His promise to be "with you always" does not clash with His leaving. He went up so that the Spirit could come down (). And now He is more available to His church than when He walked one dusty road in Galilee. The King is on the throne. So we can pray to Him, trust Him, and obey His commission, knowing the One who sent us rules over all.
Around the Table
Jesus went up, up, up into the clouds to heaven — and now He is the King over everything!
Let's do it: Lift your hands higher and higher and say, "Jesus is King in heaven!"
Jesus didn't just vanish. He sat down on His throne in heaven to rule. And He sent His Spirit to be with us here.
Let's talk: How can Jesus be in heaven and with us at the same time?
The Ascension means Jesus is enthroned at the Father's right hand. From there He reigns. He prays for us. And He stays with us by His Spirit.
Let's go deeper: Why is it good news for the mission that Jesus rules from the throne instead of staying here on earth?

If you could send one message up to King Jesus on His throne right now, what would you say?
🛡️ Defending the Faith
The Ascension isn't some old-fashioned idea of "up in the sky." It is the language of a king taking his throne. It is Jesus stepping into His place of authority. The disciples reported many times they saw the risen Jesus. Then they saw Him leave, and there were witnesses there to see it. This isn't a fuzzy myth. It is history, with a real time and a real place ().

We rarely preach the Ascension, yet it holds up everything we ask our families to do. Because Jesus reigns, the Great Commission isn't wishful thinking. It is the marching orders of a King who really does hold all authority. Because He intercedes, your stumbling prayers tonight reach a sympathetic High Priest. He lives "to make intercession" for you (). And the angels' gentle rebuke is a word for tired fathers too. "Why do you stand gazing up into heaven?" Don't get stuck in nostalgia or paralysis, waiting for some better moment. The King has gone up. The Spirit has come down. And there is work to do at your own kitchen table. So lead from the confidence that your Savior is enthroned, not absent.

Let's Pray Together
"Lord Jesus, You are not in a grave. You reign in heaven as King over all. Thank You for praying for us. Thank You for being with us by Your Spirit. Help our family trust You and obey You. In Jesus' name. Amen."
Jesus didn't just leave. He went up to reign, and He is with me still by His Spirit.
