The King Who Won for Us
Month 2: The King Steps Forward · Family Worship
Today's Scripture
Read together: Matthew 4:1–11 & Hebrews 4:15
1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, He was hungry. 3 The tempter came to Him and said, “If You are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” 4 But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” 5 Then the devil took Him to the holy city and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple. 6 “If You are the Son of God,” he said, “throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He will command His angels concerning You, and they will lift You up in their hands, so that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’” 7 Jesus replied, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 8 Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 “All this I will give You,” he said, “if You will fall down and worship me.” 10 “Away from Me, Satan!” Jesus told him. “For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.’” 11 Then the devil left Him, and angels came and ministered to Him. — Matthew 4:1–11
15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who was tempted in every way that we are, yet was without sin. — Hebrews 4:15
Memory Verse

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)
Today's reading: Numbers 24–26
Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 44 of 365 — even a hired prophet can only bless the people God has blessed.)The Heart of It
Tonight we worship together by stepping back and seeing the whole wilderness story at once. Three temptations. Three victories. Each one answered with "It is written." And then the enemy slinks away while heaven sends help. But here is the part that should make your family worship. Jesus didn't win for Himself. He won for us. Adam was tested in a perfect garden, and he fell. Israel was tested in the wilderness, and they grumbled. Every one of us is tested, and we stumble. But Jesus, the true and better King, went through the hardest testing of all and never once gave in. says it beautifully: "We do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin."
Sit in that double comfort tonight. First, Jesus understands. He is not a distant King who never knew hunger or struggle. He has felt the pull of temptation more fiercely than we ever will, because He never gave in. He gets it. Second, Jesus won. His sinless life is the spotless record that He offers to all who trust Him. We don't follow a King who merely tells us to be strong. We follow a King who was strong for us. And now He lives in us by His Spirit so we can stand. That's the gospel. It isn't "try harder." It's "trust the One who already triumphed," and then walk in His strength. Worship Him for that tonight, as a family.
Around the Table
Jesus won every single time the bad voice tried to trick Him — and He did it for us because He loves us! Let's say thank You to Jesus.
Let's do it: Clap three times for Jesus' three big wins, then shout, "Thank You, Jesus, You won for us!"
Jesus understands exactly how hard temptation feels, because He faced it all and never sinned. We can run to Him for help anytime.
Let's talk: How does it feel to know Jesus understands when something is hard for you? What would you like to bring to Him right now?
Where Adam fell and Israel grumbled, Jesus succeeded. He is the true and better King, and He offers His perfect record to all who trust Him.
Let's go deeper: The gospel isn't "try harder to be like Jesus." It's "trust the Jesus who already won, and let His Spirit work in you." How does that change the way you'll face your next temptation?

Have you ever had a teammate or a big brother or sister win a game for your team when you couldn't?— That's a little picture of what Jesus did for us in the wilderness.
🛡️ Defending the Faith
Some ask, "If Jesus is God, was His temptation even real? Couldn't He just zap it away?" Scripture answers that He faced it fully as a real man. He leaned on the Word and the Spirit, "yet without sin" (). His victory was real. And that is exactly why it can become ours ().
For Dad · Go Deeper
Family worship tonight is a good moment to make sure your children hear the gospel, not just a lesson in good behavior. It is dangerously easy for a devotional on resisting temptation to land as "be a good kid like Jesus." But the deepest note of this story is not Jesus as our example, though He is that too. It's Jesus as our substitute and champion. He won the victory we never could, and He freely gives it to those who trust Him. Hold both truths together. His sinless life is offered to your children by grace through faith. That is a real faith-response they get to make. And His indwelling Spirit then gives power for the obedience you're calling them to. Don't let your kids walk away thinking salvation is a performance review. Let them walk away worshiping a King who loved them enough to win for them, and who invites them to follow. End your worship time with thanks, not just resolve.
Draws on: Tim Keller, on the gospel as substitution rather than moral example.
Let's Pray Together
"Father, thank You for Jesus. He faced every temptation and never gave in. He did it for us. Thank You that He understands us. Thank You that He gives us His Spirit so we can stand. We trust Him. We love Him. We want to follow Him. In Jesus' name, amen."
Jesus already won the battle. I follow a victorious King, not a distant one.
