The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!John 1:29 (BSB)

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Deuteronomy 5-7

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 49 of 365 — the Ten Commandments and "Hear, O Israel" are repeated.)

The Heart of It

The moment Nathanael walked up, Jesus said something that stopped him cold. "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!" Jesus was saying, "Here is a truly honest man." Nathanael was stunned. "How do You know me?" he asked. And Jesus answered, "Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree." Nobody had been watching. There was no ordinary way Jesus could have known. But the Son of God was full of the Holy Spirit. He saw Nathanael. He saw him in a private place. He knew his character. He knew his heart. And Nathanael's whole wall came crashing down. "Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!"

This is one of the beautiful things about walking with a Spirit-filled Savior. Jesus sees the real you, and He is not scared off by it. He saw Nathanael's honesty, and He named it. He sees your quiet moments too. He sees the prayer no one heard. He sees the kindness no one noticed. He even sees the struggle you think you are hiding. Being fully known can feel a little scary. But with Jesus it is the safest thing in the world, because He knows everything and loves you still. The same Spirit who let Jesus see Nathanael is at work in us. He helps us live honestly before a God who already sees it all. We never have to pretend with Him.

Around the Table

Littles 4–7

Jesus saw Nathanael sitting under a tree, even when no one else was around. Jesus sees you all the time too. And He loves you!

Let's do it: Cover your eyes, then peek out and say, "Jesus sees me, and He loves me!"

Middles 8–10

Jesus knew exactly where Nathanael had been. He knew what kind of person he was. Jesus knows everything, because Jesus is God.

Let's talk: How does it feel to know Jesus sees the good things you do that nobody else notices?

Older 11–14

By the Spirit, Jesus saw Nathanael and named the truth about his heart. To be fully known and fully loved is the heart of walking with God.

Let's go deeper: Jesus sees everything about you. He sees your hidden good, and He sees your hidden struggles. Does that make you want to hide, or to come closer? Why?

What's one good thing you've done lately that nobody saw? Here's the secret. Jesus saw it.

🛡️ Defending the Faith

How could Jesus know what Nathanael did when no one was watching? Because He is God in the flesh. And He was full of the Holy Spirit, who knows all things (). The Gospels tell of several moments like this. Jesus knew people's hearts and their hidden pasts. That is quiet evidence that He was exactly who He claimed to be.

For Dad · Go Deeper

This story is a window into how Jesus walked in the Spirit. It is also a pattern of how the Spirit still works through His people today. The gift of a "word of knowledge" () is the Spirit revealing something we couldn't know on our own. Its purpose is always to draw a person toward Jesus, as it did Nathanael. These gifts are still given today. But classic Pentecostal teaching keeps the rail in place. The goal is never spectacle, and character is always more important than gifting. A genuine word of knowledge sounds like Jesus. It names the truth in love, and it leads to worship rather than to a performer's applause. As a father, the most important thing here is simpler still. Teach your children that they are fully seen by God, and let that be good news. A boy who knows his Father sees every hidden thing and loves him anyway grows up honest, secure, and unafraid to be real.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, thank You that You see the real me. You see every hidden moment, and You love me still. By Your Spirit, help me live honestly before You. With You I have nothing to prove and nothing to hide. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

Jesus sees the real me. He sees even the parts no one else notices, and He loves me. So I never have to pretend.
