📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Deuteronomy 11-13

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 51 of 365 — "love the LORD your God and keep His charge.")

The Heart of It

Nathanael was amazed that Jesus had seen him under the fig tree. But Jesus smiled and said something like this. "You think that was something? You will see far greater things." Then He made a stunning promise. "You shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man." Jesus was reaching back to an old story. Long ago Jacob dreamed of a ladder that reached up to heaven, with angels going up and down on it (). For centuries that ladder was a picture of a connection between earth and heaven. Now Jesus says, I am the ladder. I am the way heaven and earth are joined. The King who just stepped forward is the open door between God and people.

This is the perfect place to end our week and worship together. We began by hearing John shout, "Behold! The Lamb of God!" Now we see why that Lamb matters so much. He is the one Person who connects us all the way to heaven. Apart from Jesus, the sky is shut over our sin. But over Jesus the sky is open, and it is open over everyone who comes to Him. The Lamb who takes away sin is also the Ladder who brings us home. As a family, let's lift our eyes today. The King has stepped forward. The way to the Father is open. And He is inviting every one of us to come.

Around the Table

Littles 4–7

Jesus is like a ladder that reaches all the way up to God's house in heaven! Because of Jesus, we can talk to God anytime.

Let's do it: Climb an imaginary ladder with your hands, higher and higher. Then say, "Jesus brings me all the way to God!"

Middles 8–10

Long ago Jacob dreamed of a ladder to heaven. Jesus said He is that ladder. He is the way between us and God.

Let's talk: What does it mean that "heaven is open" because of Jesus? What can we do now that we couldn't before?

Older 11–14

Jesus points back to Jacob's ladder and claims to be that connection between heaven and earth. He is the only way to the Father ().

Let's go deeper: This week we met Jesus as the Lamb who takes away sin and the Ladder who opens heaven. How do those two pictures fit together?

💬 Conversation Starter

If there were a ladder to anywhere you wanted to go, where would you climb to? Jesus is the Ladder to the very best place of all. He brings us home with God.

🛡️ Defending the Faith

Some say all religions are just different ladders up to the same God. But Jesus didn't say He would show us a ladder. He said He is the way (), the one place where heaven stands open. We hold this with humility and kindness (). But we hold it with clarity too. The open door isn't a religion. It is a Person.

For Dad · Go Deeper

Family worship days like this are where the week's threads get tied into worship rather than mere information. Take a moment at the table to look back. This week your children met Jesus as the Lamb, the sacrifice for sin. They met Him as the One the eyewitnesses saw and touched. They met Him as the Savior who welcomes honest seekers, who sees the real us, and who is worth bringing our friends to. And now they meet Him as the open heaven between God and man. Don't rush past that to the next chapter. Linger. Sing something. Let one of the kids pray. The aim of all this teaching isn't a head full of Bible facts. It is a household that loves and worships Jesus. And here is the searching question for you this week, Dad. Is the heaven that is open over your family also open over your own heart? Lead them not as an expert delivering content, but as a worshiper climbing the same Ladder, glad to be going home alongside them.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, thank You that because of Jesus, heaven is open over our family. He takes away our sin. He is the way home to You. We worship You, and we lift our eyes to Jesus. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

Because of Jesus, heaven is open. He is the Lamb who takes my sin, and the Ladder who brings me home.
