📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Deuteronomy 18-20

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 53 of 365 — Moses even foretells a great Prophet to come, like himself.)

The Heart of It

When a king takes the throne, people want to know one thing. What kind of ruler will you be? Jesus answered that question on His very first day of public ministry. is His answer. Think of it as the King's mission statement, the headline over everything He came to do. Read it slowly and you'll notice it is packed with action verbs of rescue. He came to preach good news. He came to heal the brokenhearted. He came to proclaim liberty, to recover sight, to set people free. Every phrase is about lifting up someone who couldn't lift themselves. This is a King whose whole reign is aimed at the broken and the bound.

That is why it is worth tucking this verse deep into your hearts as a family. It isn't just a beautiful sentence. It is a window into the heart of God. Maybe you wonder, Does Jesus care about people who are sad? Does He notice the ones nobody else helps? This verse answers loud and clear. That is exactly who He came for. And here is the wonderful part. The mission didn't stop when Jesus went back to heaven. He pours out His Spirit on His followers, so we can carry the same good news to the same kinds of people. Memorizing this verse is like learning the family business. If we belong to the King, His mission becomes ours.

Around the Table

Littles 4–7

Let's learn the start of Jesus' big promise: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me." That means God's Helper was on Jesus to help hurting people!

Let's do it: Clap a beat and say it three times: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me!"

Middles 8–10

Try saying the verse in pieces. Good news for the poor. Healing for the broken. Freedom for the captives. Each piece is a job Jesus came to do.

Let's talk: Which "job" in the verse is easiest for you to remember? Why that one?

Older 11–14

This is basically Jesus' inaugural address. It is His mission statement, drawn straight from . Memorize it as a lens for reading the rest of the Gospels.

Let's go deeper: If this is the King's mission, how should it shape what our family spends time and energy on?

💬 Conversation Starter

If our family wrote a one-sentence "mission statement," what should it say? Jesus' mission was about rescuing the hurting. Could ours sound a little like His?

🛡️ Defending the Faith

People sometimes picture Jesus as just a stern judge waiting to catch us out. But His own opening words describe a King who heals, who frees, and who brings good news to the poor. We don't have to guess at God's heart toward struggling people. Jesus put it in writing on day one.

For Dad · Go Deeper

Memory work can feel like drudgery, so it helps to remember why you are hiding this particular verse in your children's hearts. A child who knows has a built-in answer for some of life's heaviest questions. Does God see me when I'm crushed? Is there hope for people who are trapped? The Word memorized in calm moments becomes ammunition for the hard ones. As urges, it is talked about along the road and when you lie down. Don't rush the meaning to chase the recitation. It is better that your kids understand one phrase deeply, like "He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted," than rattle off the whole thing like a phone number. And model it. Let them hear you still working to learn it, fumbling and trying again. That tells them God's Word is worth a grown man's effort.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, thank You for showing us what kind of King Jesus is. Keep His words deep in our hearts. And make His heart for the hurting our family's heart too. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

Jesus' mission was rescue. And if I belong to Him, His mission is now mine too.
