Today's Scripture

Read together: Luke 4:31-37

31 Then He went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath He began to teach the people. 32 They were astonished at His teaching, because His message had authority. 33 In the synagogue there was a man possessed by the spirit of an unclean demon. He cried out in a loud voice, 34 “Ha! What do You want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!” 35 But Jesus rebuked the demon. “Be silent!” He said. “Come out of him!” At this, the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without harming him. 36 All the people were overcome with amazement and asked one another, “What is this message? With authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” 37 And the news about Jesus spread throughout the surrounding region.

Memory Verse

“The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to release the oppressed,Luke 4:18 (BSB)

The Heart of It

Just days after promising to "release the oppressed," Jesus did exactly that, right in front of everyone. He was teaching in the synagogue at Capernaum, and the people were amazed, because His words came "with authority." Then a man with an unclean spirit cried out. The demon recognized Jesus instantly. "I know who You are, the Holy One of God!" Jesus didn't argue or put on a long ceremony. He simply spoke. "Be quiet, and come out of him!" And it had to obey. The man was freed, unharmed, in an instant. The crowd buzzed. "What a word this is! For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out." The mission statement of had become a living rescue.

This is what walking in the Spirit looks like at its source. Jesus didn't free that man by being clever or loud. He freed him by the authority of the Spirit who rested on Him. And remember, the same Spirit who anointed Jesus is the One He pours out on His followers (). We don't have power in ourselves to set anyone free. And we should never treat the spiritual world like a game or a horror movie. But we don't have to be afraid either. The One who lives in every believer is far stronger than anything that opposes Him. "He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world" (). The Spirit-filled life isn't about chasing scary things. It is about belonging to the King whose single word sends darkness running.

Around the Table

Littles 4–7

Jesus told a bad spirit, "Come out!" and it had to obey right away, because Jesus is the strongest of all! Nothing scary is stronger than Jesus.

Let's do it: Make a strong muscle, then point up and say, "Jesus is the strongest! I don't have to be afraid."

Middles 8–10

With just His words, Jesus set a trapped man free. Even the dark spirits knew exactly who He was, and they had to do what He said.

Let's talk: Why don't we have to be scared of dark or scary things when we belong to Jesus?

Older 11–14

Jesus has authority over evil spirits. That proves the spiritual world is real and that He rules it. The same Spirit who empowered Him now lives in believers ().

Let's go deeper: How can we take the spiritual realm seriously without getting fearful or obsessed with it?

Who's the strongest person you can think of? Now think bigger. Jesus is so strong that just His words set a trapped man free. And He's on our side.

🛡️ Defending the Faith

Some say belief in evil spirits is just ancient superstition. But Jesus was the wisest, most clear-eyed person who ever lived. He treated the spiritual realm as real, and He confronted it directly. Lives were visibly changed. We don't go looking for darkness, but we are honest that it exists. And we know the One who defeated it.

For Dad · Go Deeper

Two errors creep into families on the subject of the spiritual realm, and both rob your kids. One is the modern shrug that denies it altogether. That leaves a child defenseless and confused the day they bump into something genuinely dark. The other is an unhealthy fascination that treats every bad day as a demon and turns the Christian life into spiritual ghost-hunting. The Pentecostal middle road, faithful to this text, is sober confidence. Yes, the enemy is real (). And yes, the indwelling Spirit is decisively greater. Notice in the passage that Jesus didn't talk with the demon or let it set the terms. He silenced it and freed the man with calm authority. That is the posture to model. Not fear, not obsession, but quiet trust in Christ's supremacy. The most powerful thing you can teach your children is that they belong to the strong King, so they can sleep in peace.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, thank You that Jesus rules over everything, even the things we can't see. Fill us with Your Spirit. Keep our home in Your peace. And help us trust that You are far greater than anything that could ever scare us. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

The Spirit who freed the captive lives in me. So I can face the dark without fear, trusting the stronger King.
