Looking Back: The King Has Stepped Forward
Month 2: The King Steps Forward · Family Worship
Today's Scripture
Read together: Matthew 3:16-17 & Luke 4:18-19
16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, He went up out of the water. Suddenly the heavens were opened, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and resting on Him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased!” — Matthew 3:16-17
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to release the oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” — Luke 4:18-19
Memory Verse
““The time is fulfilled,” He said, “and the kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe in the gospel!””— Mark 1:15 (BSB)memorize this week
📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)
Today's reading: Joshua 3-5
Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 59 of 365 — Israel crosses the Jordan on dry ground into the Promised Land.)The Heart of It
Tonight we stop and look back over a whole month of watching the King step forward. For thirty years Jesus lived quietly in Nazareth. Then everything changed at the Jordan River. John pointed and cried, "Behold! The Lamb of God!" Jesus went down into the water, and as He came up, heaven tore open. The Spirit came down like a dove, and the Father's voice thundered, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased" (). Right there, all three Persons of the one true God were present at once. The Father was speaking. The Son was standing in the water. The Spirit was resting on Him. Then the King went into the wilderness. He beat back every temptation with "It is written," and He walked out in the power of the Spirit. When He opened the scroll in Nazareth, He read His own job description: "The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor… to set at liberty those who are oppressed" ().
Put the whole month together and one picture stands out. The King has stepped forward, and He did not come to be served. He came to rescue. He is the Lamb who takes away sin. He is the Son the Father loves. He is the Spirit-anointed Healer of broken hearts. This is not a distant ruler who stays on a throne far away. This is a King who steps down into our river, our wilderness, and our weary towns. And He still steps forward today, into your home and your heart, with the very same good news. Looking back should make us worship. And looking back should make us ready, because a King who has come this close is calling for a response.
Around the Table
This month we learned that Jesus is the King who came to help us! At the river, God the Father said, "This is My Son. I love Him!"
Let's do it: Spread your arms wide like a dove coming down, and say together, "Jesus is the King who loves me!"
At Jesus' baptism we got to see the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit all at the same moment. That is the Trinity: one God in three Persons.
Let's talk: Of all the stories this month, like the dove, the wilderness, "the Lamb of God," and Nazareth, which one stuck with you most, and why?
Look at the pattern. The King was anointed by the Spirit. He was tested and proven faithful. Then He was sent out announcing the kingdom. Everything was building toward His mission to seek and save the lost.
Let's go deeper: If you had to explain to a friend who Jesus is using only what we read this month, what would you say?

What's something brave or kind you did this month that you'd want God to say "Well done" about? The Father loves to say "I'm pleased with you" to His children.
🛡️ Defending the Faith
At Jesus' baptism the Father spoke, the Son stood in the water, and the Spirit came down. That is three Persons, one God, in a single scene (). When someone says Christians worship three gods, we can gently answer that we worship one God who has revealed Himself as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Always be ready to give a reason, with gentleness and respect ().

A month of "looking back" is more than review. It is how the people of God have always built faith. Joshua told Israel to set up twelve stones from the Jordan, so that "when your children ask… 'What do these stones mean?'" the family would remember what God had done (). Tonight you are stacking stones. The Jesus your kids met this month is not a Sunday-school cartoon. He is the eternal Son, baptized, tested, Spirit-filled, and on mission. Don't rush past the wonder of the baptism scene. It is one of the clearest windows in Scripture into the triune God, and it grounds your children's whole understanding of who God is. And remember, knowing the story is not the same as belonging to the King. The same Father who delighted in His Son delights to call your children His own when they repent and believe. Lead them to the river, not just to the facts.

Let's Pray Together
"Father, thank You for sending Jesus, Your beloved Son, to step forward and rescue us. Thank You for the Spirit who filled Him and now fills us. Help our whole family love the King and follow Him. In Jesus' name, amen."
The King has stepped forward. He came out of heaven, into our world, and toward me.
