Following the One with Authority
Month 3: Come, Follow Me · Family Worship
Today's Scripture
Read together: Mark 1:21-28
21 Then Jesus and His companions went to Capernaum, and right away Jesus entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and began to teach. 22 The people were astonished at His teaching, because He taught as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. 23 Suddenly a man with an unclean spirit cried out in the synagogue: 24 “What do You want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!” 25 But Jesus rebuked the spirit. “Be silent!” He said. “Come out of him!” 26 At this, the unclean spirit threw the man into convulsions and came out with a loud shriek. 27 All the people were amazed and began to ask one another, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him!” 28 And the news about Jesus spread quickly through the whole region of Galilee.
Memory Verse
““Come, follow Me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.””— Mark 1:17 (BSB)
📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)
Today's reading: 1 Samuel 3-5
Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 74 of 365 — God speaks to young Samuel: "Speak, for Your servant hears.")The Heart of It
The new disciples followed Jesus into the synagogue at Capernaum. What they saw must have made them glad they'd left their nets. When Jesus taught, the people were astonished. He taught as one who had authority, not like the scribes. The scribes only quoted other teachers. Jesus spoke as the One with the right to say it. Then His authority got even clearer. An unclean spirit cried out, and Jesus simply commanded, "Be silent! Come out of him!" And it had to obey. The crowd was amazed. They said, "He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him."
This is who the disciples had chosen to follow. Not a clever speaker. The King of the whole universe, dressed in a carpenter's clothes. His words carry weight in the classroom and in the spirit world. For our family, that settles a wonderful question. Is Jesus worth following? Yes! Because there is no one and nothing with more authority than He has. Sickness, sin, fear, even the dark powers must answer to His voice. When we follow Jesus, we're not following our best guess or a nice idea. We're following the strongest, kindest, most trustworthy Person in all of creation. So as you gather to worship tonight, remember whose family you belong to. Remember how safe that makes you.
Around the Table
Jesus told a bad spirit to go away. And it HAD to obey Him right away! Jesus is the strongest of all. And He loves us.
Let's do it: Flex your muscles. Then say, "Jesus is stronger than anything, and He's my friend!" Now sing a praise song together.
Everyone was amazed because Jesus spoke "with authority." What's the difference between Jesus and a teacher who just repeats what other people say?
Let's talk: What's something you're scared of? How does it help to know Jesus has authority over even that?
Jesus' authority showed up in two ways. People saw it in His teaching. And they saw it when He commanded an evil spirit to leave. So why does following Jesus mean actually obeying what He says, and not just admiring Him?
Let's go deeper: Where is it hardest for you to let Jesus be in charge? Is it your time, your words, or your choices? What would giving Him that look like?
💬 Conversation Starter
If you could have any superpower, would you pick super-strength? Or the power to make any storm or scary thing stop with just one word?— Jesus already has that, and more.
🛡️ Defending the Faith
Critics sometimes paint Jesus as just a wise teacher. But Mark shows Him doing what only God can do. He commands spirits. He speaks with His own authority instead of borrowing it from someone else. A good teacher who claimed God's authority would be either right or dangerously wrong. And the evidence () points to right.
For Dad · Go Deeper
Family worship is where the lordship of Christ stops being an abstract idea and becomes the air your home breathes. The disciples followed Jesus right into the synagogue. Discipleship and gathered worship belong together. And your kids are watching to see whether Dad treats the worship of Jesus as central or optional. So tonight, model authority the right way. Don't lead like a scribe quoting others, and don't lead like a tyrant demanding compliance. Instead, submit yourself out loud and visibly to the authority of Jesus. Confess where you need His lordship. A father who kneels under Christ's authority gives his children both a safe place to stand and a pattern to follow. Keep it unhurried and prayerful and warm.

Let's Pray Together
"Lord Jesus, You speak with authority, and even the strongest powers obey You. We're so glad we belong to You. Be the King of our home. Be the King of our hearts. Help us not just to listen to You, but to obey You. In Jesus' name, amen."
I follow the One whose word the whole universe must obey. And He is good.
