Today's Scripture

Read together: Mark 3:31-35

31 Then Jesus’ mother and brothers came and stood outside. They sent someone in to summon Him, 32 and a crowd was sitting around Him. “Look,” He was told, “Your mother and brothers are outside, asking for You.” 33 But Jesus replied, “Who are My mother and My brothers?” 34 Looking at those seated in a circle around Him, He said, “Here are My mother and My brothers! 35 For whoever does the will of God is My brother and sister and mother.”

Memory Verse

He appointed twelve of them, whom He designated as apostles, to accompany Him, to be sent out to preach,Mark 3:14 (BSB)

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: 2 Samuel 18-20

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (David grieves Absalom — a father's broken heart, and a longing for a better Son.)

The Heart of It

Right after Jesus chose the Twelve, His mother and brothers arrived. They stood outside the crowded house, asking for Him. The crowd passed the message along: "Look, Your mother and Your brothers are outside seeking You." Then Jesus said something startling. He looked around at the people seated at His feet. They were listening, learning, and following. He asked, "Who is My mother, or My brothers?" Then He answered His own question: "Whoever does the will of God is My brother and My sister and mother" (). Jesus wasn't being unkind to Mary. He loved and honored her. He was opening the family wider than anyone imagined. The deepest family bond is not only flesh and blood. It's belonging to Jesus.

This is wonderful news for our home tonight. We are a family by birth, yes. But Jesus invites every one of us into something even deeper. It's His own forever family, made up of all who follow Him and do the will of God. That doesn't happen automatically because Mom and Dad believe. Each of us has to respond to Jesus ourselves. We each say "yes" to His call to follow. When we do, the people around this table become more than your brothers and sisters and parents. They become your fellow followers of Jesus. We're companions on the road, the way the Twelve were to each other. Let's worship the One who gathers us. And let's each make sure we have personally said "yes" to Him.

Around the Table

Littles 4–7

Jesus has a big forever-family of everyone who loves and follows Him. And we can all be part of it!

Let's do it: Hold hands around the table and say together, "We belong to Jesus!"

Middles 8–10

Jesus said His real family is "whoever does the will of God." How does someone become part of Jesus' family?

Let's talk: What's one way our family can do God's will together this week?

Older 11–14

Belonging to Jesus' family isn't automatic, and you don't inherit it. Each person responds to His call personally. Following Jesus makes us brothers and sisters in Him.

Let's go deeper: Have you personally said "yes" to following Jesus? What does doing "the will of God" look like in your life right now?

💬 Conversation Starter

What makes our family special? And how would it feel to know that everyone who loves Jesus everywhere is part of an even bigger family with us?

🛡️ Defending the Faith

When someone says… "Christianity is just something you're born into. You only believe it because your parents do." You can kindly reply: "Actually, Jesus taught the opposite. He said His family is 'whoever does the will of God' (). That's a personal choice, not an inheritance. Each of us has to decide for ourselves whether to follow Him." Faith can be passed down, but it must still be personally owned. We say this gently and respectfully, "with gentleness and respect" (). We're inviting people in, not arguing them down.

For Dad · Go Deeper

carries a truth for Christian fathers that is both sobering and freeing. You cannot believe for your children. You can teach, model, pray, and soak your home in the gospel. And you must. But each child still has to come to Jesus by their own free, Spirit-enabled response. This lines up squarely with how Scripture presents salvation. God's grace genuinely reaches out to all (). That grace can be received or resisted. It is never forced. Your job is not to manufacture conversions. Your job is to make Jesus unmistakably attractive and to keep the invitation always open and warm. Avoid two errors. The first is presuming your kids are saved simply because they're yours and well-behaved. That is covenant-by-bloodline thinking, and it skips the personal "yes." The second is anxious, controlling pressure that tries to force a decision on your timetable. Instead, be like the Father in . Keep the door open, keep the gospel clear, and trust the Spirit to draw them. Disciple them toward a real, owned faith. Let their assurance grow as they learn to abide in Christ (). It is not a one-time transaction they can coast on forever.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, thank You for making us a family. Thank You for inviting each of us into Jesus' forever family too. Help every one of us to personally say 'yes' to following You and doing Your will. Draw our children to Yourself. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

Following Jesus makes us more than relatives. It makes us His forever family.
