The Heart of It

Yesterday we met the very first Beatitude: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." But here's an honest question. How does anyone become poor in spirit? We can't simply decide to feel humble. Our hearts naturally puff up. They defend themselves. They insist we're doing just fine. A truly humble, God-needing heart isn't something we manufacture by trying harder. It's something God gives. And that's where the Holy Spirit comes in.

Jesus told a religious leader named Nicodemus, "Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God… that which is born of the Spirit is spirit" (). A brand-new heart is a Spirit-born heart. The Holy Spirit is the One who opens our eyes to see our real need. He softens our pride. He gives us that humble, hungry, poor-in-spirit heart Jesus blesses. We don't climb up into the kingdom by our own goodness. The Spirit gives us new life so we can enter it. And He doesn't stop there. The same Spirit who gives us new birth keeps working in us every day. He grows humility in us. He keeps us depending on God. He helps us pray "I need You." Walking in the Spirit means letting Him keep us low and leaning. The blessed life isn't self-made. It's Spirit-made. And it's offered freely to anyone who will say yes to Jesus.

Around the Table

Littles 4–7

We can't make our own hearts good. But God's Holy Spirit can give us a brand-new heart that loves Him!

Let's do it: Put your hand on your heart and pray, "Holy Spirit, make my heart new and soft for God."

Middles 8–10

Jesus told Nicodemus we must be "born again" by the Spirit. The Spirit gives the humble, God-needing heart Jesus blesses.

Let's talk: Why can't we just try harder to make our own hearts humble? Who has to help us?

Older 11–14

A poor-in-spirit heart is the fruit of new birth. The Spirit, not our willpower, brings us into the kingdom and keeps us depending on God ().

Let's go deeper: If salvation is the Spirit's gift, how do we receive it? (Hint: God offers it, and we respond in faith.)

💬 Conversation Starter

When you plant a seed, you can't make it grow. You just water it and wait. How is a new heart from the Holy Spirit a little like that?

🛡️ Defending the Faith

Skeptics say people can't really change. Yet all across history the gospel has turned proud, hard hearts soft. That's proof of a power beyond ourselves. The new birth Jesus described to Nicodemus is still happening today. Changed lives are evidence worth pointing to ().

For Dad · Go Deeper

Here is a truth that should keep us both humble and hopeful as fathers. You cannot give your children a new heart. You can teach, model, pray, and discipline. And you should. But the new birth is the Holy Spirit's work alone (). This frees you from a crushing pressure. Your kids' salvation does not rest on your parenting performance. And it drives you to your knees, because the One who can actually change them is God. He freely offers that new life to all. He gently invites a real, willing response. He does not drag the unwilling. So pray for your children by name. Present the gospel often and warmly. And trust the Spirit to do what only He can do.

Let's Pray Together

"Holy Spirit, we cannot make our own hearts new. Only You can. Give each of us a humble, God-loving heart. Keep us leaning on You every day. We say yes to Jesus. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

A humble, God-needing heart is the Spirit's gift. And He gives it to all who come.
