The Spirit Says I Belong

Month 7: Who Am I? · Walking in the Spirit

⏱ ≈ 13 min together

Today's Scripture

Read together: Romans 8:14-16

14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery that returns you to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption to sonship, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.

Memory Verse

So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.Genesis 1:27 (BSB)

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: 1 Chronicles 9-11

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (David is crowned king and his mighty men gather around him.)

The Heart of It

Being made in God's image tells you that you matter. But the gospel gives an even closer, warmer truth. Through Jesus, you can be adopted into God's own family. says we did not receive "the spirit of bondage again to fear, but... the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, 'Abba, Father'" (). "Abba" is a tender word. It's close to "Daddy." When you belong to Jesus, the Holy Spirit Himself moves into your heart. He helps you call the great God of the universe your loving Father. That's not just knowing about God. That's belonging to God.

And look how sure this is. "The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God" (). On days you feel far away or unsure, the Holy Spirit whispers the truth back to you: you belong here. This is real assurance. It doesn't depend on whether we feel strong. The Spirit confirms it as we stay close to Jesus and keep walking with Him. Your identity isn't only "image-bearer of God." For those who trust Jesus, it becomes "beloved child of God." His own Spirit lives inside you as the proof.

Around the Table

Littles 5–8

When you love Jesus, God becomes your very own Father, like the best Daddy ever! His Helper, the Holy Spirit, lives in your heart. He reminds you that you belong.

Let's do it: Put a hand on your heart and say softly, "Abba, Father, I belong to You!"

Middles 9–11

"Abba" is a warm word, almost like "Daddy." Think of God as a far-off King. Now think of Him as a close, loving Father. How is that different?

Let's talk: When do you feel like you don't belong? How could remembering you're God's child help in that moment?

Older 12–15

The Spirit Himself bears witness that we're God's children. That's real assurance for those who keep walking with Jesus. It rests on the Spirit's confirmation, not on shifting feelings.

Let's go deeper: One kind of assurance is based on feelings. Another is based on the Spirit's witness as we stay close to Christ. What's the difference?

What does it feel like to walk into a place where everyone is genuinely happy to see you? That's a tiny picture of belonging in God's family.

🛡️ Defending the Faith

Some people think God is distant and cold. But the Bible says His Spirit helps His children call Him "Abba, Father" (). That's close and kind. When a friend pictures God as far away, we can gently share that knowing God can be deeply personal. We say it "with gentleness and respect" ().

The witness of the Spirit was central to John Wesley's own faith. His heart "strangely warmed" was the inward assurance of . Note the Arminian and Pentecostal balance here. Assurance is real and wonderful, given by the Spirit to those who genuinely abide in Christ. Yet it is not a mechanical guarantee that lets us drift. It grows as we keep walking with the Father. For your kids, the most powerful apologetic for "God is a good Father" may be you. The way you discipline, forgive, delight, and stay present quietly shapes whether "Abba, Father" feels true or hollow. So ask the Spirit to make your fathering a faithful signpost to the perfect Father, even if it is an imperfect one.

Let's Pray Together

"Abba, Father, thank You for bringing us into Your family through Jesus. Holy Spirit, remind our hearts every day that we belong to You. Help us stay close to You. Help us trust that we are Yours. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

The Spirit lives in me and whispers the truth: I am God's own beloved child.
