All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for instruction, for conviction, for correction, and for training in righteousness,2 Timothy 3:16 (BSB)memorize this week

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Matthew 4-7

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Day 2 of 365 — the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus teaches us how His people live.)

The Heart of It

The young writer of asks a question every kid faces sooner or later. "How can a young man cleanse his way?" In other words, how do I stay close to God and away from what's wrong when temptation is everywhere? His answer is simple and powerful. "By taking heed according to Your word." Then he says something we never want to forget. "Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You." To hide God's Word in your heart means to memorize it so deeply that it lives inside you. It is ready the second you need it.

Here's why that matters so much for defending the faith and living on mission. You can't always carry a Bible in your hands. But you can always carry one in your heart. Maybe a friend asks a hard question. Maybe you feel tempted. Maybe you feel afraid. The verses you've hidden inside come right back up. They are God's own words, exactly when you need them. Even Jesus did this. When the devil tempted Him, He fought back by saying "It is written" three times (). He had hidden the Word in His heart, and so can you. Memorizing isn't about showing off. It's about being ready.

Around the Table

Littles 5–8

"Hiding" God's Word means putting it in your heart by learning it by memory. Then it's always with you.

Let's do it: Clap a rhythm and say today's verse together three times. Each clap helps it stick!

Middles 9–11

Jesus answered the devil with "It is written." He could do that because He had the Word ready in His heart ().

Let's talk: What's one verse you'd want ready in your heart for a moment when you feel scared or tempted?

Older 12–15

Memorizing isn't legalism. It's loading your heart with truth. Then the Spirit can bring it to mind right when you need it.

Let's go deeper: How could having verses memorized help you answer a friend's tough question without scrambling for your phone?

🛡️ Defending the Faith

A verse you've memorized is ready in a heartbeat. You don't need wifi to recall it. Maybe a friend has a question. You can gently say "the Bible actually says…" and really mean it. That's in action. You are being ready to give an answer, and being kind about it.

For Dad · Go Deeper

We often expect kids to memorize what we ourselves have never learned. If your children only ever see Scripture read and never recalled, they'll assume it lives on a shelf, not in a heart. So pick this week's verse and learn it alongside them out loud. Do it at breakfast, in the car, at bedtime. What plants it is repetition in your normal rhythm, not pressure. And don't aim merely for accurate recitation. Aim for treasured words. A father who quotes Scripture warmly in everyday moments shows his kids that God's Word is a friend, not a school assignment.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, help us hide Your Word deep in our hearts. Then it will be ready when we need it most. Make our memory verse part of us this week. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You
