📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Psalms 29-32

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 233 of 365 — the joy of forgiveness in Psalm 32.)

The Heart of It

Today we slow down and hide this verse in our hearts. Notice how Jesus describes loving God. We love Him with all our heart. That's our feelings and affections. We love Him with all our soul. That's our very life. And we love Him with all our mind. That's our thoughts and questions. God doesn't want just part of you on Sundays. He wants all of you, all the time, even your thinking. That's good news for a kid who loves asking questions! Loving God with your mind means you don't have to switch off your brain to follow Him. The God who made the stars and the rules of math is not afraid of your hardest "why."

Then Jesus says the second command is "like" the first. They belong together, like two sides of one coin. You cannot truly love God while being cruel to the people He made. And you cannot love people well for very long without God's love filling you up first. This is why memorizing this verse matters so much. When you're tempted to be unkind, these words will already be living inside you, ready to steer you. When someone challenges what you believe, they'll be right there too. Saying them again and again isn't just exercise for your memory. It's loading God's truth where you'll need it most.

Around the Table

Littles 5–8

Let's say it with motions! "Love the Lord your God" (hug yourself), "and love your neighbor" (point to someone).

Let's do it: Try to say the whole verse three times, a little faster each time. Giggling is allowed!

Middles 9–11

Jesus said to love God with your heart, soul, AND mind. Which one is easiest for you? Which is hardest?

Let's talk: What does it mean to love God with your mind? (Hint: thinking, learning, and asking honest questions!)

Older 12–15

Practice the verse until you can say it without looking. Then notice the order: love God first, then neighbor.

Let's go deeper: Why does Jesus put loving God before loving people? What goes wrong if we flip the order?

🛡️ Defending the Faith

Some people think faith means turning off your brain. But Jesus commands us to love God "with all your mind." He wants thoughtful, reasoning followers. We can be both kind and clear. That's exactly what calls us to. We're ready with an answer, and we give it with gentleness.

For Dad · Go Deeper

"With all your mind" is a quietly revolutionary phrase. In a culture that often treats faith as private feeling and reason as belonging only to skeptics, Jesus claims the mind for God. If your children grow up thinking they must check their intellect at the church door, they'll be sitting ducks the first time a confident professor or YouTuber pushes back. Part of discipling kids today is showing them that Christianity invites investigation. Loving God includes wrestling honestly with hard questions and finding Him faithful in the wrestling. Model this. When your child asks something you can't answer, don't bluff and don't panic. Say, "Great question. Let's go find out together." That posture teaches them the faith can take the weight of their thinking.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, we want to love You with all our heart, soul, and mind. We give You every part of us. Keep Your Word alive in our hearts, ready when we need it. And help us love the people around us the way You love us. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

God wants all of me, my heart, my soul, and my mind. And He's not afraid of my questions.
