The Helper Who Lives in Us

Month 9: The Spirit's Power for Witness · Walking in the Spirit

⏱ ≈ 13 min together

Today's Scripture

Read together: John 16:7-13

7 But I tell you the truth, it is for your benefit that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He comes, He will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 in regard to sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see Me; 11 and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world has been condemned. 12 I still have much to tell you, but you cannot yet bear to hear it. 13 However, when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak what He hears, and He will declare to you what is to come.

Memory Verse

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”Acts 1:8 (BSB)

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Psalms 70-72

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 245 of 365 — Psalm 72's vision of a king whose reign blesses the whole earth.)

The Heart of It

Jesus said something that must have stunned His friends. He said, "It is to your advantage that I go away" (). How could Jesus leaving be a good thing? He explained it this way. If He didn't go, the Helper wouldn't come. But if He went, He would send the Spirit. When Jesus walked the earth, He could only be in one place at one time. But the Holy Spirit can live inside every believer everywhere, all at once. So in a wonderful way, Jesus is now closer to His people than ever. He is not just beside us, but within us. That is why walking in the Spirit isn't about trying harder on our own. It is about living connected to the Helper who already lives in us.

Jesus described some of the Spirit's work. The Spirit "convicts" the world. He gently shows people the truth about sin, about Jesus' righteousness, and about right and wrong (). That conviction is a kindness. It is how God wakes a heart up so a person can turn to Jesus and be forgiven. The Spirit also "will guide you into all truth" (). He doesn't make up new ideas. He points us to Jesus and the Word. So walking in the Spirit each day looks like this. We listen for His gentle nudges. We let Him steer us away from wrong and toward Jesus. We ask Him for help in the very moment we need it. You don't have to wait until you're grown up. The Helper lives in everyone who belongs to Jesus, and He is ready to help you walk His way today.

Around the Table

Littles 5–8

Jesus said it's good that He went away, because now His Helper can live inside everyone who loves Him — even you!

Let's do it: Whisper, "Holy Spirit, help me walk Your way today," and take one big step forward.

Middles 9–11

The Spirit "convicts" us. That is the little nudge inside when something is wrong. That nudge is a gift to help us choose right.

Let's talk: Can you remember a time you felt a gentle "nudge" not to do something wrong? What happened when you listened?

Older 12–15

Jesus said the Spirit guides us into "all truth." But He always points to Jesus, never to brand-new teachings. That's a test for any "spiritual" claim.

Let's go deeper: If someone says, "The Spirit told me something that goes against the Bible," how does today's passage help you respond wisely and kindly?

💬 Conversation Starter

Have you ever felt a little voice inside saying "don't do that," and you were glad you listened? That can be the Holy Spirit helping you walk His way.

🛡️ Defending the Faith

People sometimes claim "the Spirit led me" to justify anything they want. But Jesus said the Spirit guides into truth and always glorifies Jesus (). He never contradicts God's Word. So a real leading of the Spirit will always line up with Scripture. We can say this humbly and gently (). We test every "leading," including our own, against the Bible.

For Dad · Go Deeper

"It is to your advantage that I go away" overturns our instinct that Jesus-in-the-flesh would be the better arrangement. Yet the Spirit's indwelling is the fruit of the finished work of the cross. Pentecost flows from Calvary. Teach your children that the Spirit's convicting work is grace, not condemnation. He wounds in order to heal. And guard them against two errors. The first is quenching the Spirit, ignoring His promptings. The second is counterfeiting Him, calling our own desires "the Spirit's leading." The safeguard is . The true Spirit always magnifies Christ and never strays from the Word He inspired. A discerning home tests impressions against Scripture without becoming cynical about the Spirit's real, present voice. Walk in step with Him yourself, and your children will learn the cadence by watching you.
