The Promise Is for You
Month 9: The Spirit's Power for Witness · Walking in the Spirit
Today's Scripture
Read together: Acts 2:37–39
37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and asked Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 This promise belongs to you and your children and to all who are far off—to all whom the Lord our God will call to Himself.”
Memory Verse
“And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”— Acts 2:4 (BSB)
📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)
Today's reading: Psalms 91–93
Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Psalm 91 promises God's nearness to those who trust Him — the same nearness His Spirit brings.)The Heart of It
When Peter finished, the crowd was "cut to the heart" and asked, "What shall we do?" Peter's answer is the gospel in miniature. He said, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." Turn from your sin. Trust Jesus. Follow Him in baptism. And the Spirit Himself is given to you. Notice that the Spirit is called a gift. You don't earn Him by being good enough. You receive Him by faith, the way you receive any gift, with open hands.
Then Peter widened the circle as far as it could go. He said, "For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call." You. Your children. Even people in faraway places who hadn't even been born yet. That means it reaches all the way down to your family, in your home, today. Walking in the Spirit starts here. The Helper is not a reward for spiritual superstars. He is a promise for every person who answers God's call. Have you said yes to Jesus? Then keep asking the Father to fill you. He loves to give His Spirit to those who ask ().
Around the Table
God's Spirit is a present He gives to everyone who loves Jesus — even kids! You just say yes and ask.
Let's do it: Hold out cupped hands like you're getting a gift and pray, "Jesus, fill me with Your Spirit."
Peter said the promise is for "you and your children." How does it feel to know God's promise has your name in it?
Let's talk: A gift only helps you if you receive it. What does it look like to actually receive God's Spirit?
Repent, believe, be baptized, receive the Spirit. This is how the Christian life normally begins, and it's offered to everyone God calls.
Let's go deeper: The Spirit is a gift we receive by faith, not a wage we earn. How does that change the way you try to follow God day to day?

What is the best gift you ever received? Did you have to earn it, or was it just given? That is a picture of how we get the Holy Spirit.
🛡️ Defending the Faith
We follow believer's baptism because Peter linked it to repenting and believing. Those are things only a person old enough to respond can do (). Baptism beautifully pictures a faith you already have. It doesn't replace the heart's real "yes" to Jesus.
For Dad · Go Deeper
is one of the warmest verses for a Christian parent: "the promise is to you and to your children." God delights to work across generations, but be careful what you conclude from it. The promise is not automatic inheritance. Your child must still personally answer the call, for "the Lord our God will call." This is the Arminian and Pentecostal hope at its best. Grace is genuinely offered. There is a real call to be answered. And there is an open invitation to receive the Spirit. Your job isn't to manufacture faith in your kids. It is to keep the gift in front of them and pray they say yes. Then keep modeling a life that keeps asking to be filled afresh.

Let's Pray Together
"Father, thank You that the gift of Your Spirit is for us and for our children. Help each of us truly receive Jesus, and keep filling our family with Your Holy Spirit as we ask. In Jesus' name, amen."
The Spirit is a gift, not a wage. And the promise has my name in it.
