Timothy, a Young Example
Month 11: Living It Out · Bible Story
Today's Scripture
Read together: 1 Timothy 4:12
12 Let no one despise your youth, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.
Memory Verse
“In everything, show yourself to be an example by doing good works. In your teaching show integrity, dignity, and wholesome speech that is above reproach, so that anyone who opposes us will be ashamed, having nothing bad to say about us.”— Titus 2:7-8 (BSB)memorize this week

Today's reading: Jeremiah 47-49
Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 322 of 365 — God speaks His word over the nations around Judah.)The Heart of It
Timothy was young when Paul left him in charge of the church in a big, busy city called Ephesus. He was probably still in his teens or early twenties. Some of the people there were older than Timothy, and you can imagine a few of them thinking, "Why should we listen to a kid?" Paul knew Timothy might feel small and unsure. So he wrote him one of the most encouraging sentences in the whole Bible: "Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity" (). Paul did not say, "Wait until you're older to matter." He said the opposite. Start now, by living so well that no one can look down on you.
That word "example" is huge. It means a pattern, a sample, the kind of thing other people copy. Paul lists exactly where a young person can lead. You lead in the words you say, the way you act, how you love people, your faith in God, and staying pure inside and out. You do not have to be famous or grown-up to be an example. You just have to live for Jesus on purpose, today, where you already are. Think of a nine-year-old who tells the truth. Or a thirteen-year-old who is kind to the kid nobody likes. Or a six-year-old who shares without being asked. These are not "future" disciples. They are real ones, right now, showing the watching world what Jesus is like.
Around the Table
Timothy was young, but he loved Jesus so much that grown-ups learned from him! You can be a good example today too.
Let's do it: Pick one way to be a good example before bedtime — sharing, telling the truth, or being kind — and do it on purpose.
Paul told Timothy not to let anyone look down on him because he was young, but to be an example in his words, actions, and love (v. 12).
Let's talk: Which of those five things — words, actions, love, faith, or purity — is easiest for you, and which is hardest?
Timothy carried real responsibility as a young leader, and Paul's answer to his insecurity was character, not age. A godly example silences the people who would dismiss you.
Let's go deeper: Where has someone underestimated you because of your age? How could living well change their mind without you arguing?

Who is someone younger than you that copies what you do?— That means you are already an example — for good or bad. What do you want them learning from you?
🛡️ Defending the Faith
You do not have to wait to grow up to defend your faith — sometimes the strongest argument for Jesus is a young person who lives like Him on purpose. Paul told Timothy to lead with his example (), and reminds us our answers land best when our lives back them up.

Notice that Paul never tells Timothy to overcome his youth by being louder, flashier, or more aggressive. He tells him to overcome it by being exemplary — quietly, consistently godly. There is a lesson here for how you disciple your own kids: their credibility, like Timothy's, will be built on character, not volume. And there is a lesson for you too. Paul could call Timothy to a high standard because Paul himself lived it; he had earlier told the same young man, "you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose" (). You are the pattern your children are studying most closely. Before you ask them to be examples, ask the Spirit to make you one worth copying.

Let's Pray Together
"Father, thank You for young Timothy, who loved You and led the way for others. Help each of us, even the youngest, to be a good example. Let it show in our words, our actions, and our love. May people see Jesus in us. In Jesus' name, amen."
I don't have to be older to matter to God — I can be an example for Jesus today.
