Today's Scripture

Read together: 1 Peter 2:9-10

9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, to proclaim the virtues of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Ezekiel 13-15

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 329 of 365 — God warns against false prophets who tell people only what they want to hear.)

The Heart of It

Listen to the big, beautiful names God gives His people in this verse. You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession. Peter is writing to ordinary folks. He's writing to fishermen, mothers, slaves, and kids. And he's telling them who they really are in Jesus. You are not a nobody. If you have trusted Christ, the King of the universe calls you His treasure, on purpose. And notice this. Being chosen here is about the family God is building. Anyone who comes to Jesus is welcomed in. He died for all (). Whoever responds to His grace becomes part of this royal family. It is not a club for a special few. It is an open door God is calling everyone through.

But Peter doesn't stop at who we are. He tells us why. We are these things to "proclaim the virtues of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light." God didn't rescue us just so we could feel cozy and safe. He saved us, and then He sent us. A priest in the Bible was someone who stood between God and people, helping others come to God. Now every believer gets that job. We help the people around us find the light we found. That is what "living it out" means. We have been called out of darkness so we can call others in. You are chosen, and you are sent.

Around the Table

Littles 5–8

God says you are His special treasure! And He wants you to tell others how wonderful He is.

Let's do it: Stand tall like royalty and shout together, "I belong to God, and He is GREAT!"

Middles 9–11

A priest helps other people come close to God. The Bible says every Christian is a kind of priest now.

Let's talk: Who is one person you could help "come closer to God" this week — and how?

Older 12–15

"Chosen" means God is gathering a people for Himself, and the door is open to anyone who comes to Christ. The purpose of being chosen is mission: to proclaim His praises.

Let's go deeper: If God called you out of darkness so that you'd shine for others, how does that change why you exist?

🛡️ Defending the Faith

When someone says, "Christians think they're better than everyone else," we can gently answer: not at all — we're just people who found light in the dark and want to share it. We're "His own special people" because of God's kindness, not because we earned it (), so there's nothing to brag about — only Someone to point to ().

For Dad · Go Deeper

It is easy to read "chosen generation" through a grid that makes God's choice cold and arbitrary — a few in, most out, no real say. But Peter's point is the opposite of cold: he is overwhelmed that these unlikely people are now God's own treasure. The "calling out of darkness" is an invitation that genuinely reaches "all men" (), and the priesthood is given to every believer, not a clergy elite — your kids included. So lead your home as a household of priests on assignment. Ask yourself this week: do my children experience our faith as a gift to be shared, or a fence to hide behind? You set that tone. A father who treats the gospel as good news he can't stop talking about raises kids who feel sent, not stuck.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, thank You for choosing us and calling us out of darkness into Your marvelous light. Help our family remember we are Yours, and send us out to tell others how good You are. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

God called me out of darkness on purpose — so I could help someone else find the light.
