The Spirit Helps Us Persevere

Month 12: Sent & Standing Firm · Walking in the Spirit

⏱ ≈ 13 min together

Today's Scripture

Read together: Romans 8:26-28

26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know how we ought to pray, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groans too deep for words. 27 And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. 28 And we know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose.

Memory Verse

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off every encumbrance and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with endurance the race set out for us.Hebrews 12:1 (BSB)

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Joel 1-3

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Joel 2 contains God's great promise: "I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh.")

The Heart of It

All week we've been talking about running with endurance. But maybe you've wondered, "How do I keep going when I'm weak and tired?" Today Paul gives the answer, and it's wonderful. He says, "the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses." God never tells us to run the race on our own strength. He doesn't ask us to win by sheer willpower. The Holy Spirit lives inside every follower of Jesus. He is right there in the hard miles. Paul even says something amazing. Sometimes we don't know what to pray. We're too sad or too confused for words. And in those moments the Spirit Himself prays for us "with groanings which cannot be uttered." Imagine that. When you can't even find the words, God's own Spirit is carrying your heart to the Father. You are never running alone.

That's why this race is Spirit-powered, not self-powered. The same Holy Spirit who gives believers power to be witnesses () also gives us power to keep going. He helps us stay kind. He helps us forgive. He helps us obey when it's hard. And then comes one of the most comforting promises in the whole Bible. Paul says, "all things work together for good to those who love God." It doesn't say all things are good. Some things really do hurt. But God is so wise and so powerful that He weaves even the hard parts into His good plan for those who love Him. So when the race gets steep, you don't grit your teeth alone. You ask the Helper. You lean on Him. And you trust the Father who is working all of it for good.

Around the Table

Littles 5–8

When you're too tired or sad to even know what to say, the Holy Spirit helps you pray! He's God's Helper living in you.

Let's do it: Put a hand on your heart and whisper, "Holy Spirit, help me." That's a real prayer He loves to answer.

Middles 9–11

Paul says the Spirit helps us "in our weaknesses." How is that different from a coach who just yells, "Try harder!"?

Let's talk: When was a time you needed help to keep going? How could the Spirit help you next time?

Older 12–15

Look at the promise. It says "all things work together for good." It does not say all things are good. God works them for good for "those who love God." That's real hope, and it doesn't pretend pain isn't real.

Let's go deeper: How does leaning on the Spirit's power, instead of your own willpower, change the way you face a hard week?

Have you ever been so tired or upset that you didn't even know what to ask for? Did you know the Holy Spirit can pray for you in those moments?

🛡️ Defending the Faith

Some people say Christianity is just self-improvement. They think it's about trying really hard to be good. Kindly explain that it's the opposite. We're given the Holy Spirit, God Himself, to help us in our weakness. We don't earn God's help by being strong. He helps us because we're weak and we trust Him. Share it gently, in the spirit of .

For Dad · Go Deeper

Classic Pentecostal teaching insists the Spirit is not a vague influence. He is a Person who actively empowers ordinary believers. And shows that this power is as much for enduring as it is for witnessing. Many dads quietly try to run the Christian life on sheer willpower. They try to lead their families the same way. Then they burn out and wonder why. The Spirit-filled home is not the loudest or the flashiest. Character outweighs gifting every time. It is simply the home that has learned to depend on God. So here's the searching question. Are you praying for your kids in your own strength? Or are you letting the Spirit, who "makes intercession" according to God's will, shape your prayers? Before you lead them into life in the Spirit, ask the Father to fill you again (). You cannot give what you are not receiving.

Let's Pray Together

"Holy Spirit, thank You that we never run alone. Help us in our weakness. Pray through us when we have no words. Give us power to keep going. Father, we trust You to work all things together for our good. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

I don't finish this race on my own strength. The Spirit Himself helps me keep going.
