The Spirit Points Us to Truth

Month 2: Does God Exist? · Walking in the Spirit

⏱ ≈ 13 min together

Today's Scripture

Read together: John 16:13

13 However, when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak what He hears, and He will declare to you what is to come.

Memory Verse

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.Psalm 19:1 (BSB)

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Acts 23–25

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Paul stands before rulers and keeps telling the truth about Jesus.)

The Heart of It

This week we've looked at reasons to believe God is real. The sky. The design. The honest heart. But here's something wonderful. We are never left to figure it all out by ourselves. Jesus promised, "When He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth." The Holy Spirit isn't a feeling or a force. He is God Himself, living inside everyone who belongs to Jesus. And one of His jobs is to gently lead us toward what's true and away from what's false. He is like a guide leading travelers safely through the mountains.

This changes how we think about big questions. When you wonder, "Is God really there?" you're not on your own. You can ask the Spirit to help you see. When a friend asks you a tough question and your mind goes blank, the Spirit can bring the right words and the right kindness (). And here's the balance. Good evidence and the Spirit work together, not against each other. Evidence is like a map. The Spirit is like the guide who helps you actually read it and trust it. So we study. We think. We look up at the stars. And all the while we lean on the Spirit of truth to lead us home.

Around the Table

Littles 5–8

The Holy Spirit is God's Helper. He lives in our hearts and helps us know what is true and good.

Let's do it: Pray together, "Holy Spirit, help me know the truth." Then squeeze hands and say, "He hears us!"

Middles 9–11

Jesus called Him "the Spirit of truth," and He guides us. A guide is more than a map.

Let's talk: When have you needed a guide? At a new place, a hard game level, a tricky problem? How is the Spirit like that for knowing God?

Older 12–15

Evidence and the Spirit aren't rivals. Reasons clear away roadblocks. The Spirit opens our eyes. We need both, and we can ask for His help anytime.

Let's go deeper: Have you ever asked the Holy Spirit to help you understand something about God? Try it this week before a hard conversation.

💬 Conversation Starter

If you were exploring a giant cave, would you rather have just a map, or a guide who's been through it before? Why? The Holy Spirit is both the Map-giver and the Guide!

🛡️ Defending the Faith

You don't have to be a genius to defend your faith. You have a Helper. When you don't know the answer, it's perfectly fine to say, "Great question, let me find out." All the while, quietly ask the Spirit for wisdom and kindness (; ).

For Dad · Go Deeper

Classic Pentecostal teaching holds that the Holy Spirit is not merely a doctrine to affirm. He is a Person to depend on daily, including in the work of knowing and defending truth. This is freeing for a dad who feels under-equipped. How you handle your kids' hard questions rests less on your apologetics library and more on your communion with the Spirit. Jesus said He "will teach you all things" (). Don't split the intellectual from the spiritual. Pray your way through tough questions with your children. Model dependence out loud. And keep the goal pure. The Spirit leads us to truth so we'll love and obey Jesus, never so we'll feel superior in a debate. Character over cleverness, always.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, thank You for the Holy Spirit, our Helper and Guide. Lead us to know You more. And when others ask us about You, give us the right words and a kind heart. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

I'm not figuring out the truth alone. The Spirit of truth is my Guide.
