Running Our Race Together

Month 12: Sent & Standing Firm · Family Worship

⏱ ≈ 15 min together

Today's Scripture

Read together: 1 Corinthians 9:24-27

24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way as to take the prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games trains with strict discipline. They do it for a crown that is perishable, but we do it for a crown that is imperishable. 26 Therefore I do not run aimlessly; I do not fight like I am beating the air. 27 No, I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.

Memory Verse

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off every encumbrance and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with endurance the race set out for us.Hebrews 12:1 (BSB)

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Amos 4-6

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Amos warns against being "at ease" and comfortable while ignoring God.)

The Heart of It

Today is Family Worship, so let's gather everyone and bring our whole "race" week together. Paul loved sports pictures. He writes, "Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it." He's not saying only one Christian can win. He's saying run like it matters. Real runners train hard and stay focused. Paul even says an athlete is "temperate in all things." That means he gives up some good things to win a perishable crown. Back then the prize was a leafy wreath, and it would soon wilt. How much more, Paul says, should we train ourselves for "an imperishable crown"! That's a reward from Jesus that lasts forever. This is the heart of being sent and standing firm. We live on purpose, with self-control, because the prize ahead is worth everything.

Then Paul gets personal. He says, "I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest... I myself should become disqualified." Even the great apostle stayed humble and watchful. The Christian race isn't won by being naturally gifted. It's run faithfully, one obedient day at a time, with God's help. And here's the best news. Your family runs it together. You cheer each other on. You carry each other's burdens, like we talked about yesterday. You keep your eyes on Jesus, like we've practiced this week. And you lean on the Spirit's power. As a family, you are a little team of runners God has placed side by side, headed for an imperishable crown. So let's not coast. Let's train, encourage each other, and run to win.

Around the Table

(Family Worship — read, sing or play a worship song, then walk through all three tiers together so everyone takes part.)

Littles 5–8

A runner trains and practices to do their very best! We "train" by loving Jesus a little more every day.

Let's do it: Have a tiny relay around the room, then huddle and shout, "Team Jesus — let's run together!"

Middles 9–11

Paul gave up some good things to win the prize. He called it being "temperate in all things." What might a kid your age give up to run well for Jesus?

Let's talk: What's one way our family could encourage each other to keep running strong this week?

If our family were a relay team, what would each person's "leg" of the race be? Who's the encourager? Who's the steady one? Who's the helper? Who's the brave one?

🛡️ Defending the Faith

Christianity asks for our whole lives, not just a quick "yes." And that itself is worth defending. Some people say faith is just a once-and-done ticket that never changes you. Kindly point out that real faith trains, perseveres, and bears fruit. That's because it's a living relationship with Jesus, not a coupon. Assurance belongs to those who keep abiding in Him. Share it warmly, with the gentleness and respect of .

For Dad · Go Deeper

Paul's "lest I... become disqualified" is one of the strongest answers to the idea that the believer's perseverance is automatic and effortless. Salvation is by grace through a real faith-response. Assurance is the warm confidence of the one who keeps abiding in Christ. It is not an unconditional guarantee for someone who walks away and never returns. That truth should not make a father anxious. It should make him attentive and grateful, like a runner who trains because the prize is real and the Coach is faithful. On this Family Worship day, your role is to set the pace without setting a crushing one. Model disciplined, joyful dependence on the Spirit, not grim willpower. Your children will largely run the way they watched their father run. So run to win, run on grace, and let them run beside you.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, thank You for putting us on the same team. Help us train hard and run faithfully. Help us cheer each other on toward the prize that lasts forever. Keep us close to Jesus. Keep us strong in Your Spirit, all the way to the finish. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

We're a team running for a crown that never fades. So let's train, cheer each other on, and run to win.
